I was taught and I keep hearing that the yellow signs in curves (speed limit) are designed for cars.

    FALSE

I have found NO WHERE in all 48 states that to be the case. Excluding abnormal freight (overweight, tankers, etc) I drive a dry van and have never come across one curve that i could not only the cautioned speed limit but even a bit over. Even when i am loaded top heavy or i was pulling a reefer.

Am i remotely suggesting that folks should disregard the cautionary signs? NO, when i see them, i slow down, typically somewhere near the speed posted and move on. If it is raining or the ground is wet, i slow down MORE than the posted signs, if its ice and snow, i creep

My purpose for bringing this up is that bad rules make people ignore good rules. if you teach a driver that these signs are designed for cars and he finds out that he can go faster than that, he may begin to ignore signs

Its better to teach truth in safety, not scare tactics

The roads are designed specifically for trucks, NOT CARS, because cars can go thru those curves a lot faster than a truck, and any traffic engineer will design roads for speed limits faster than what is posted and for vehicles that are typically larger than cars, (its for insurance purposes and safety factors) so these cautionary speed limits are for trucks (bikes can go even faster than cars)

There are other problems of poor designs, especially in construction zones and signs may be wrong or roads not graded properly. But as a general rule, please do not tell folks these signs are for cars.

I remember driving thru a construction zone in florida some years ago, speed limit was 70, the construction zone sign was 70 and the road was not capable of you driving anything faster than 50. Mistakes do happen. We should always be cautious when driving, and expect the unexpected. But, lets not teach wrong info

General rule of thumb for the recommended speed sign on turns/ramps I use is the amount of extra signs you see that go along with that speed sign. If it says 25 mph ramp, and there are many arrow signs, also even maybe flashing signs, possibly truck rollover warning signs, the more of that extra the more they mean it. Now if you see one that says 45 mph for the bend all by it's lonesome, take a look at it, and if you know the road, often times you can cruise right along at a much higher speed.
