There is an X15 duscussion in the Pete forum here, but thought I would ask here.

Just wondering what everyones opinion is regarding the Efficiency vs Performance for this application.

Dump truck grossing 80,000 pounds. I see dealers bringing in lot units with both versions. So I called Cummins directly and asked what they though. As I said, I gross 80,000, and 140,000 when pulling the pony but I don't pull it much anymore. 18 speed trans, 3.91 to 4.30 rear gears and 22.5 rubber is normally what I run.

Cummins told me either engine is a good fit for this application. They sent me graphs showing both motors peak at 512 to 513 horsepower and both have 1850 torque. But I like that the E series makes that torque at lower RPM. And it's extended warranty is also cheaper than the performance.

But I also wonder if one is better than the other in this application as far as regen intervals?

Any thoughts as far as how each is holding up?

I've got the efficiency x15 in a car hauler and I couldn't be more pleased with this engine. Not one issue in the first 123k miles. Doesn't leak, doesn't burn oil and gets pretty good fuel economy.

Regen intervals will be the same with either one. Expect around the 100 hour mark as they are timed unless conditions dictate it is needed sooner. The major difference being the performance uses the Nexgen fuel pump. Economy series used the same old pump as the ISX but with all the upgrades. Haven't seen a ton of issues with either one. Turbo speed sensors, and some engine harness issues come to mind.

I doubt you'll notice much difference between the two engines/ratings. I can tell you most vocational trucks I see are spec'd with performance. Linehaul is economy.

Both fuel pumps are still lubed with crankcase oil.

then why they say that in case of fuel pump failure debris will not go to engine.

Whose "they"? The pump parts failures on the 2250 is old news. The change to the oil system was a redesign of the oil bypass valve which the old plastic valve and spring was allowing metal from the failed pumps past it and taking out the #4 main bearing. This is the change that was made to prevent progressive engine damage. Plus upgrading the parts In the fuel pump. Tappers and plungers to titanium.

I assume the only real difference is that after the warranty expires, you won't be able to crank the Efficiency up to 605hp/2050.

    Oxbow Thanks this.
