I've seen several individuals say that when crossing chains such as with coils, or securing equipment/vehicles, you should use a pad or protective item between the chains to prevent them from rubbing. At tmc i was never trained to do this, however here at builders our safety director says we're not to use x chains because several guys have been ticketed specifically for this. Now i still use x chains, but for safe measure i put a wool pad in between.
What's the word on this from you guys here? Is there a specific rule that these dot officials use to issue tickets, or is this a bunch of horse ####?
X chains on coils

Shotgun coils, at the risk of repeating, require a certain amount of chain through the eye. X pattern is the way to get it done based on WLL of chain for a given size. It's so important. Lives depend on it.

I dont know if it's bs or not, but I do remember being told that x-chains through coil eyes is illegal and can get you a ticket for doing it. I've known guys who said D.O.T. has looked under their tarps. Otherwise, x-chains shouldn't touch. I have heavy pieced of rubber I put between the chains to keep them off each other. The company I'm with now has had a couple guys have issues at the scalehouse for not having padding between chains. So when possible, we just don't x them tight together.

Padding goes between coil and deck, padding goes between chain and coil.
Chain on chain padding? #### it, if you are in a anal DOT Area, grab some padding and wrap it.Dominick253 Thanks this. -
Shotgun coils, X chains, no padding on chain on chain.
U said tmc taught u that, and I know maverick too. I pad straps with excess straps if it's in the pocket, but I never padded chain.... sounds bs to meRERM and Dominick253 Thank this. -
I never padded chain where they did not make contact with anything or with each other. I stick to the deck, and coil padding.
To be honest DOT man inspects for working limit of strap and chain versus stamped weight of coil. Once he satisfies himself that there are enough chain and strap on the coil to meet 50% strain limit strength on you are good to go.
Ive had a policy, throw everything on there. So that our Lord can reach down, pick up the entire truck and trailer with load upside down if he wants, coil will stay on.KeithT1967 and MACK E-6 Thank this. -
I think its funny that they raise hell on you flat bed guys when you haul coils. I have drove dry van my entire career and have hauled tons of steel and copper coils with nothing more that 2x4 bracing nailed to the floor
