Would you buy a Sterling tractor?

Looking for a single axle truck and found a nice Sterling. Would this be bad to buy as they no longer make the trucks? I'm sure drivetrain parts wouldn't be a problem as most are made by other companies. Just wondering about the other odds and ends.

depends on what engine they have, but there is a reason that you barely see them on the road anymore. All sterling trucks are made with freighliner parts. Just not the most reliable out of the bunch

Has the cummins in it. Only reason I'm looking at it.

I drove a Sterling, but a Ford straight truck, and it was a POS. It rode awful and once when letting the clutch out with a heavy load, it broke all the bolts on the right side transmission mount. It wasn't half the truck the Louisville Ford was it replaced.

Buy two that way you have one for parts. Sterlings are rebranded fords, the change came after freightliner bought the ford heavy lineup. A real pain to work on

I've driven a few Sterlings at a previous gig, and never had anything significant go wrong with them. 2 single axles with C12 Cats, and a tandem axle with a C13 cat an a SOLID mounted cab (boy was that a kidney puncher on the Cross Bronx). The major complaint was that the dashboard seems to be made of many smaller plastic pieces and they break very easily, and rattle.

Wasn't too impressed with them. One place I worked at had one with a 12.7 Detroit. They are built pretty half assed if you ask me. A lot of automotive style parts and designs in them.

Most of the controls appeared to be ford pickup pieces .

I may steer clear of it. Although it's hard to find a single axle tractor that has a good engine and automatic.
