Not a trucker here but hope you guys can help. I have a friend who owns a small company of 7 trucks and doesn't know what to do after the insurance decided not to renew. His trucks had 2 accidents in the last year one which is costing the insurance like 80 grand I think. Not the drivers fault is all I know. He's been shopping for quotes but it looks like no one will cover him. If he starts a new company with new trucking permits will he be called a chameleon carrier by the insurance companies and the DOT? I thought that was for companies that were ordered to shut down and then start as a new company

Are there other options other than going out of business? He's an older guy maybe he could sell the business. Would the new owner have problems with insurance? I think its just been a bad year for him because the guys been in business for almost 9 years with no problems. Figured I can help him by talking to you guys online. Thanks for the help

Typically most companies lease their equipment on to a larger carrier at this point or sell out

You don't say what kind of hauling they do but it might be worth checking into becoming an agent/fleet owner with a larger carrier.

I would suggest you put the DOT numbers on this thread and let us see what we can find out. Some of us have good computer skills and a less then high regard for the law.

I would consult a transportation attorney or NASTC (National Association of Small Trucking Companies)

From the insurance side.......YES......if he starts a new authority we'll know about it and would consider him starting the new authority in an effort to distance himself from the "bad" authority.
