When I was considering a job working with a pressurized tanker, I was warned that they can be very dangerous like many things within the trucking industry. In order to stress the importance of NOT messing with the tank's caps and/or hatches when pressurized, I was told to watch the following short video clip... which certainly proves the point and I'm glad the guy pictured in it appears to walk away from that powerful blast.

If you work with a pressurized tank, please be extra careful not to make the same mistake that happened in the above video. Needless to say, it could very easily kill a person. Make sure you know where the pressure relief valve is, and how to use it, when needed.

    Be safe out there!

That's a bulk tank, but the danger is there in chemical tanks too. Probably 70% of our chemical loads are unloaded with pressure, usually air but sometimes with nitrogen. Either way, I'm not opening the dome lid unless the pressure gauge is on zero and the air valve is open and not bleeding any more air. At 20 psi the force pushing against the dome lid from the inside is equal to a 5000+ pound weight pushing on it.

And when you do open the manlid, obviously make sure it’s depressurized, and leave the last 2 wing bolts on the opposite side of the hinge the last to unscrew.

    1 PSIG = 100# of force.

Trying to close a partially open hose ear under pressure is JUST as dangerous.

While blowing off a loaded bulker, the driver reached up with his rubber hammer to push the ear fully closed on the 6" cap on the fill pipe.

They found the cap in a back yard about 1/2 mile away...

Liquid air pressure discharge challenge, blowing plasticizer in to a bottom fill with no check valve...

Same here. In fact, my boots don't leave the ground unless the tank gauge is at zero with the blowdown valve open. That's the only time when I know it's safe for me to be away from the controls.

No way in hell would I ever get on top of a trailer that was under pressure.

If you haul crude oil and pressurize the tanker (don’t have your vent open when loading) and try that pressure release valve at the top of the tanker you’re more than likely going to make a mess. Particulate oil will spray out with the pressure release and dribble down the side of the tanker. We had a nepotism hire several years back who gave a great education in “I wonder what would happen if” scenarios.

I buy my own cam locks. For some reason none of the companies I’ve worked with ever supplied them. Better safe than sorry. IMG_8781.jpeg
