I know that the window tint is not supposed to be less than 70% light transmission on the side windows per the FMCSA. http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.60
On our dump trucks we adhere to this.
However I have a dually pickup that is only under FMCSA when I am pulling a trailer which about 25% of the time. I am considering tinting the windows to the 25% state allowed limit as this Texas sun is brutal. I know I will be in violation when towing but I am considering taking that chance. Just curious what the penalties, points, consequences are. Is it just a fine or are there more serious implications?
For what it is worth I had 25% tinted windows on my last pickup and was stopped but the DOT three times for weight check and they never asked about the windows. Maybe I just got lucky.

First, the cop had to 'sign out' at shift start the meter that tests light passing. Right there your ahead...
Flipflops Thanks this. -
My truck. 40% windshield and 15% on sides. Got 3 fixit tickets
If you have a problem with getting pulled over then dont do it. That is just one more excuse for them to pull you over.
If you don't care and got nothing to worry about then do it.
The sun will turn your face into a rasen after years of driving and I will not let that happen to me.
Edit: everything I own has overly done things to it. My daily car is 5% all around and windshield at 30ANARCHYLOGIC, Wespipes and Badmon Thank this. -

Yes sir. Saw a guy who has been driving for id assume 20+ years the left side of his face was really leathery looking.(hence why I said raisen) Hard to describe. I'd rather prevent it now. I have yet to get crap for it in ca, but Utah and Nevada are really picky. Sucks when it's blasting rain, snow, to try and roll the windows Down. I tell them how it is and take the ticket and move on with my day. -
none of my windows in any vehicle have any tint added on. they came stock with 23%. all my vehicles have been 23%. so i'm pretty sure that's a standard number for any glass.
yes i have a light meter. i used to be a state certified safety inspector. light meters are just one peice of required equipment.
unless you can find an additional 7% to add on. your going to be over the limit.
in utah, used to be the back windows could be whatever. i'm not sure on the law now, i'd have to look at the state published inspection manual. there used to be tint shops all over the valley. they've all since long closed up. -
I have no doubt I would be over the limit. I was just curious wha the penalty was.

your thinking the other way around. 23% is light, 87% is dark.
ALL vehicles come with 23%. give or take 1 %. cars, semis, ALL.
that means 77% light is allowed through the window.
utah, the law is 70% light transmittance. aything less is a failure on safety inspection.
