Can I run a window 5000btu AC unit pluged into my inverter? Idk how many amps the inverter is...but I use it with a microwave and I have to idle up or my battery volts will go down. The 5000 BTU AC unit uses 4.5 volts and 450 Watts. Could I run this while idling my truck at night, or would I have to idle my truck up more RPMs like my microwave? I would stick the AC unit out the passenger window. It's brutal sleeping at night and have been doing it all summer and can't take much more.

I'm confused reading this post, no AC unit plugs into an inverter that uses 4.5volts(I think you mean amps?) But otherwise I'd expect to see 450-600 watt draw, thats do able at a constant, but the compressor start up is much, much higher and would likely exceed the inverter's capacity, meaning the AC would draw 2000watts+ on start up. I'd love to be wrong, for your comfort... but I don't think the numbers work.

Instead I'd look at the price of fixing the trucks AC, what's wrong there?

Well then there's no point to get an ac if you still need to idle.

@scottied67 has a portable ac, he might help

Watts are what counts when it comes to inverters. Add up all the watts that the items you are running at the same time are rated at and add 10% and as long as your inverter is rated for that amount or more you are OK.

With something like an AC unit with a motor and compressor, TheDude1969 is correct, it will draw a lot more power when starting up so you may want to figure for 25% - 35% more instead of 10%.

I installed a 6000 btu window AC through my back wall and it will run about 3 hours on just the inverter and standard battery bank when it is hot. On temperate nights around 80 degrees, it can run all night cycling on and off as needed to keep truck at 73 degrees just on batteries.
I added a 3100 champion generator and it powers the AC at idle consuming very little just over a gallon per night or up to 10 nights on the extended run tank.

I am also confused..... to use the inverter, you need to idle the truck. if you're idling the truck, why aren't you using the truck AC?

    Dominick253 and bzinger Thank this.
