I was considering getting a Class B CDL in Maryland but I have a conviction of a misdemeanor of 2nd degree assault on my record. The conviction was a year ago. I would like to know if all companies that would hire a class B CDL driver are going to run a background check? Do they require you to wait a certain time period since your conviction before they hire you?
thanks for any input
Will all trucking companies run a background check?

Depends on the company. I'd say smaller ones would be more likely to not run it but it's also going to depend on what you are moving. The bigger thing is a dmv abstract which typically goes back 5 years and you can pick up from dmv for around 20$

You can get a job easy with a Class-A, but don't know about Class-B.
Your conviction is no big deal with most trucking companies; no reason to try to hide it.Last edited: Sep 26, 2015

Most trucking companies are going to pull your DAK (hireright) report. This report will report your driving history in regard to were you were fired or quit. Your DMV records are there too. DAK also reports on drug testing and will list any company that's pulled your file. Have you ever abandoned a truck or load? That's there as well. The DOT requires I believe a 10 year employment history too. That's there if you have been driving. If you are trying to get a job like hauling mail or entering military bases yes they are going to do a criminal background check. You will also be subject to a criminal background check if you ever seek a TWIC card or a haz-mat endorsement. I recommend everybody that drives get a copy of their DAK. Its free I got mine last year, that's why I know what's on it.

I know a lot who say they do a very through back round check to scare ya into telling them EVERYTHING even when you stole a piece of candy when you were 5, but don't check much more than the last employer.

As well as the above replies, most companies that even bother to do a criminal background check only worry about felony convictions, as far as I've heard.

I told all the companies I applied to about everything I thought would be on my MVR and background.
Turns out when you get in trouble in a small town it's more profitable for them to pocket the fine and not report it.
Every recruiter asked me where they could find a record of my tickets because they weren't on my background or MVR -
If you plan on driving for a carrier that hauls into Canada, they will likely run a crim hx because with an arrest/conviction the canuks won't let you cross, even with something as minor as yours.....One minor assault conviction is not that big a deal to get past....Now, if it's theft, robbery, burglary, drug trafficking/possession, etc, well that's another matter.....

Misdemeanor assault should not be a big deal. Might even help keep that telephone tough guy dispatcher off your back.
