Evening folks.
I'm about to jump on board with U.S. Xpress. I'm told by the recruiter that they allow inverters and will even install them for you. So, I went out and bought a Chicago Electric 1000W Modified Sine Wave Inverter. Now, I'm wondering if that was a smart move...
I'd like to be able to run the following in my truck, but not necessarily all at the same time. Some things I will be wanting to run simultaneously. Those items will be marked with a *.
23" HP Flat Screen HD monitor* (including periods of several hours when truck is off)
Laptop* (including periods of several hours when truck is off)
XBox 360* (including periods of several hours when truck is off)
Alarm Clock* (24/7, including when truck is off)
700 Watt Microwave (Truck will be running)
700 Watt 4-Cup Coffee Maker (Truck will be running)
Base Charger/Cleaner for my Braun Razor* (24/7, including when truck is off)
and...I was wondering if anyone has any experience with portable air conditioners? Like, say, this one? Power usage says 560W and it is supposed to cool 216sq ft (about the size of my master bedroom), so that ought to be more than enough cooling power. Also says it's low-voltage start up. Anyone ever tried these?
Thanks!
Will a 1000 watt inverter...

wow, Ok Miss Hilton NO!
Go to loves and get yourself a 2000Watt Powerdrive Inverter they're always on sale there for $179
That AC will drain your batteries WAY to fast, might as well idle
And power inverters have 3 and sometime (rarely) 4 outlets so you wont be able to have all 100 things plugged in at once.
Get yourself a battery powered alarm clock, then go to a TS and buy a ScreamingMeanie you will NEVER not get up. I use a battery powered alarm, the screamingmeanie, AND my alarm on my cell phone.
Unplug the razor once its charged....

Being away from home 12 days at a time, I feel I ought to have SOME creature comforts. A laptop and an XBox for entertainment beyond billboards and the bullsh|t spoken on the CB seems fair. The coffee maker and microwave will equal more money in my wallet because I can save money by not eating out, buying pot rot, and less time spent at truckstops waiting my turn for a microwave.
Thanks for the information. Can you please elaborate on why I should upgrade the inverter?
Anyone else want to throw in their 2 cents? -
Your 1000 watt will do the job, just keep it where it can get good air flow or when you run the micro it will over heat.
Never have heard of anyone trying the a/c you talked abt.
I wonder about your monitor, it might not fit anywhere in the truck, most trucks don't have a space for anything larger than 19" good luck.
How much power does the xbox use? You would have to add the watt useage together of the things you want to use at the same time. -
the only problem might be the microwave--should be ok--i have run them on small ones before--its just thateven tho it is 700amps--the initial start up will be quite a bit higher---i beleive there is a good thread on here explaining why

1000 watts...might be pushing it...
1500 or 1750 will run just about any consumer electronics item....
you will find that running an inverter will draw down your batteries very fast....
you will be ok for a bit...but will need to idle quite a bit...you xbox session will not last long...but it will overheat without ac, and you will likely get the "red ring" pretty quick....
an ac on battery power...lol...
My suggestion....if you have time to need all that stuff, find a place that let's you run harder.....
Maybe I rough it, but I find a laptop (with a usb tv tuner), smartphone, and 12v cooler works great....they all have 12v adaptors....
Remember anytime you make ac you lose efficiency....such means lost runtime...if the item you use has a "brick" on the power adaptor, it is doing a ac to dc conversion anyway...so just buy a dc adaptor (might be a step up or step down transformer depending on the item...my laptop runs on 18v..). -
PS
Adding more outlets does not get you more power...(kinda like having checks in your checkbook, but wondering why you bounced a check)....the 2 outlets on most inverters are more than enough to overload, overheat and fry an inverter pretty quick....
remember...total watts must be below the rated watts of the inverter...and they have fans and get LOUD when run hard...also the modified sine wave of the cheapest inverters ate pretty hard on some items....better modified sine wave inverters are usually ok...pure sine wave is usually an overkill (but very nice and $$). -
To determine the watts an item needs, look at the label...some may list watts...most will list amps....just multiply the amp by 120....that will give you watts...if an item has an electric motor it usually needs 2x the watts to start running(or more) for the inital surge...

Personally, I'd go bigger. The microwave may say it's 700 watts, but that's what the food gets. It actually pulls close to 1100. I have a 700 watt from Walmart and it shows almost 1100 on my inverter. So I looked it up and when they advertise a certain amount of wattage on microwaves, that is talking about what it puts to what's being heated. Not what it draws.
Spend a little extra money and get a bigger inverter. I keep a toaster, microwave, 21" flat screen, xbox, printer, fridge, coffee pot, fan and soon to get a George Foreman grill. I run a Cobra 2500 watt inverter. I have a smaller one that runs off the 12v power supply in sleeper for the TV and lap top to run off of.
I also don't idle all the time, either. I try to idle as little as possible. I don't have any issues....well, not since the inverter was grounded properly. lol -
You want to go bigger because you want TWICE what your max draw will be, so a 700watt Microwave will require at least a 1400 watt inverter.
Over useing an inverter (pulling to much from it) can and will cause a fire which is why allot of companys either dont allow them or only allow small ones that you wouldnt attempt to pull that much from.
And for the microwave high idle while your running it, watch the lights inside your sleeper even while your high idleing you'll see that they dim when the microwave starts up! And then let it idle AT LEAST 30 min before shuting it off or useing the rest of your stuff will drain the battery real quick.
I have a LED LCD HDTV, my Laptop, a 3.3CF fridge and freezer, and a 700watt microwave so i know what you mean about wanting to be comfortable
