Hello there, I live in Alabama and I just graduated from CDL school, my wife is going to be a travel nurse and I support her. But I want to follow her and be there for her, I also would like to get hired on with a company and put my CDL to use. I have an a class CDL but I wouldn't mind driving B.
Sometime last week I spoke with JB Hunt about this and they said I'd have to transfer my driver's license to Washington State (the contract state my wife and I will be staying in for 6 months) and they would need my new address.
Now I told them we are keeping our trailer and mortgage and we aren't permanently moving but they still said my Alabama CDL license is not valid.
I'm about to contact Schneider and see what they have to say. I would prefer to not exactly job hop.
My ideal job would be me transferring to various hubs every six months and working regional / local routes. Is this even possible? I would like to be near or close to where my wife is at all times.
I remember when the recruiter for Schneider stopped by our class, he said that transferring was possible without actually leaving the company.
Wife wants to travel nurse, I want to follow her, Can I get a regional or local job anywhere?

Try a temp service. You can bounce from company to company without it being job hopping because your employer is the temp service. You are paid by the temp service. In other words, you can work for 10 different companies in a year, but your employment record will only show one employer; the temp service.

UPS pays the most, plus Teamsters benefits.
Temp services pay really well. I worked for one at one time and my pay was more than the company drivers at the companies where I was assigned.ExoGeniVI Thanks this. -
Schneider veteran here....
Schneider will let you transfer to different divisions every 6 months -- provided you have a satisfactory service record in the division you're trying to leave.
Where in Washington state is your first hop?

Your basic idea (with Schneider, at least) is a sound one.
A few suggestions to keep you from getting in too deep, too quickly:
- Avoid any job or account where you are delivering to/from ANY of the so-called "dollar store" accounts: Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc. Those jobs are a BAD IDEA for rookies (or anyone close to that).
- Avoid any intermodal work -- until you have AT least 9 months experience.
- If you switch over to their tanker group -- do so only with the stipulation that you have been assigned (from the start) to a dedicated account.
- As a new driver with Schneider -- if you leave a tractor for more than 2 - 3 days -----> BE SURE & TAKE ALL YOUR STUFF WITH YOU.
