Being profitable has nothing to do with the trailer you're pulling.

All can make or break you.

That being said, over size/weight pays best. But that doesnt mean it will be consistent or profitable over the long term. Steady well paying runs would be safer alternative in my opinion. But there are guys that do nothing but heavy haul,.. so you cant dismiss that fact.

Just having the trailer doesnt get you the loads. You have to find someone willing to pay you what you think you are worth.

    agree with hurst,

it's not the trailer. it's the owner.

specialized heavy haul pays good. but you gotta be willing to sit for days to find a load. i've seen guys sitting 7 days.

So what you're saying, is that I need an APU, vuqube and a penchant for wasting time?

All good points , I just think that a dropdeck combination trailer gives you more open option on cargo , I am presently been school on a flatbed and I have observed that the owner operator needed to pass up on some freight more often than not BC of equipment he had in hand .

Its not just heavy haul. I've been sitting in Casper for 2 days. I had a good paying load set up before I got here, broker canceled at last min. Said shipper accidentally put the load on another truck. I doubt it was an accident. I think he did it for less money.

I'm dead heading from here 5 hrs south to Pueblo to pick up an over size load heading into Texas. Pays $3300 for just over 1000 mi. Rather do that then take cheap haul just to get out of here.

    Good luck guys.

i get by with my laptop. and movies. laptop plugged into truck radio makes a very good surround system.
i once had a tv. but i don't speak the langauge of the only channels i could receive.

one is going to find loads that they just can't haul becuase they don't have the equipment. it's hard to be versatile to haul everything you would like to haul.

Nobody really knows for sure. Most O/Os don't even know their fuel cost per mile off the top of their head. Let alone anything else about their numbers. Most just pull what they like to pull and that's good enough.

Personally, I think hazmat tanker is the better option for making the most take home pay with the least BS. As soon as I use up my motor, I'm liquidating my truck and flatbed and going that route.

But, in open deck. You can't get stuck in too deep a hole with a 48' flat or 48' step. All bought with cash, no debt!
Those 2 trailers will haul the bulk of the volume that's out there. Don't get big expensive equipment, not have enough volume to keep you busy, and net less take home than a Werner driver, while living your life in the back corner of the truckstop on the laptop looking for that big load.

Hope this isn't too much straight talk for you. It may not be exactly what you want to hear, but I won't blow smoke up your ### like too many other operators will.
