Driving for Swift, noticed that if I took US-50 (loneliest highway) across Nevada instead of I-80 it would save a whole lotta $ on fuel. I know that there's a low clearance tunnel near Tahoe but drivers could catch it after that. I don't think any of the major carriers use US-50 and there are no truck stops along it. Has anybody run on that highway, say, in the wintertime? Is it just too dangerous, i.e. too icy, too much wildlife, too isolated? What's the deal?
Thanks,
Eric
Why not use US-50 across Nevada

Howdy, I'm new to trucking but am very familure with 50. I like it I love the lonleyness. Services are limited but the few towns you come to have good food and drink. You can come off of I-80 and drop down (s) to pick it up out of Carson City. If your going into Ca. you can't no trucks unless your making a dilivery. The CHP will get you from Myers just before the grade all the way to Placerville. It's one of those no longer than so many feet kingpin to axel things. The highway from Reno to Carson is 395 I think. 50 is pretty brutal in the winter especially in the snow. Nevada is a desert but it's a mountain range and then a valley to the next mountain range and this goes on for 14 or 20 times. And some of em' approach 6 or 7 thousand feet. If you like to explore go for it

I ran US 50 a few times. Its pretty good running most of the way. I would get off I 80 at Fernley Nev and take Alt 50 to where it hooked up with 50. The road is straight for the most part and no real bad hills. There is one hill to use caution on. I think its coming out of Austin Nev. Lots of curves on this one but not real steep. Make sure you have some food and water with you. Its a long way across there and not to many places to stop. Its been a few years since i ran across there but I think there was a small truckstop around Ely Nev. and the place I used to stop was the Nowhere Cafe just before the Ut state line.

I have driven US 50 across Nevada many times and there are a few hills that could be treacherous during the winter. Every time I drove it, the weather was sunny and there wasn't much to worry about. I always fueled up in Grand Junction (Colorado) first, and once had to stop at a little fuel stop in ELY, but that was before the new Travel Stop opened up. US50 isn't for sissies, thats for sure.

Yup, there's a reason that they call US50 "the lonliest highway in the US".....

yeah I know the feeling of life on a 'lonely highway'.....I just spent time on one myself....except I was stuck on numerous buses and planes......kinda still feel like I'm there, on a 'lonely highway' that is, ah but such is life, no pain no gain right ? Besides Santa promised me a 'Wonderful Life' of which I know I am about to receive, so it's all worth it to me........Maybe someday soon Mr.Bowles Santa will bestow you with the very same gift.

When I worked for a magazine company I took a very lonely highway from Reno to Vegas. It was very nice, I loved it. There was one truck stop along the way that was pretty good.
