We have overhauled a few engines for some customers that have used Lucas from day one. The engines showed the same typical wear of engines that didn't use Lucas. The overhauls were also done in normal or typical mileage, so Lucas really didn't prolong the engine life. We have also torn down engines for other reasons, such as blown headgasket or whatever, on engines that have been using Lucas and again they all show the normal wear of engines without it. I'm just stating what I have seen. For those that are hard core in believing Lucas is the miracle additive for your engine and are happy to pay me put it in, my hand is out reached!
Why do people use lucas "oil stabilizer"?

Synthetic oil is better than petroleum for a number of reasons. It reduces friction because the molecules are uniform. It still runs the same thickness as 15w40 during normal operation, however it doesn't thicken up as much as 15w40 does when it's really cold out. There's no loss in running it other than your wallet.
And yes Lucas is very very thick. Here's the links to prove it:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/viscosity-charts/
http://www.lucasoil.com/images/medialibrary/01_HDOilStabilzr_1_2.pdf
LOS has a Cst viscosity of 110 at 100C. That's operating temperature. Compare that to even the thickest gear oil on that viscosity chart, it is literally "off the charts". I can't imagine how poorly it flows when it is cold. Even at the freezing point it may be like honey.
You can see on that BITOG link that SAE 40 has a viscosity range of 12.50- 16.29. Compare that to 110. Even the most extremes are about 5.60-21.89 for regular oils. Even at 10% added, we're talking a very serious thickening of the oil at operating temperature, even with a 50 weight oil. You may think that more oil pressure is good, but you're cutting down on the flow. More flow = cooler bearings. -
Lucas Oil products are relatively new in this part of the world. We have been using them for the last few years in both trucks & cars alike. Our experience haas been very positive, especially where we had it fitted to truck transmission which let in water and we feared the worst. We got out light as Lucas Oil Stabiliser definitely protected the gears, bearings, selectors etc from grenading. Fantastic stuff in our view which helps protect our equipment.

Because, Alan5oh, putting gear oil in your engine is good for it. Don't you know anything? Sheesh! LOL.
I actually added a gallon once and noticed higher oil temperature almost immediately. I went on the www and found that my experience was not uncommon. It seems that Lucas does not contain any anti- foaming additives, this causes bubbles in the oil, which in turn trap heat causing higher oil temps.Last edited: Oct 28, 2012

When we service a customers truck and they request Lucas we have to put the Lucas jug in hot water for a good 20 mins or it won't even flow out of the jug!
Hanadarko Thanks this. -
A short addition to previous posts...
Do you know what the viscosity of Lucas Heavy Duty oil Stabilizer is? 110 Cst @ 100 deg C.!!! By comparison 40 wt or 5/15W-40 is around 14-15 Cst @ 100 C. Even 250 wt gear oil is only >41 Cst @ 100 C. So your average viscosity running 1:10 lucas/15W-40 could be well into the 20s @ 100 C.Last edited: Oct 28, 2012

We use it in gearboxes

First let me say I am not going to argue with anyone this is just my opinion and experience so please take it for exactly that and nothing more.I have always used Rotella and LOS as directed on the bottle, 20% that is 2 gal per 10. My 1st truck had a NTC cummins that went 750,000, 2nd had a signature 600 that I rebuilt @ 600,000 and @ a total of 1,012,097 it broke the crank and block. My 3rd and current truck has a BXS ACERT 475 and has over 1,000,000 miles on it the 1st owner gave me every piece of paper on the truck including the original build sheet, and he swears that the only oil in it ever has been straight Delvac 15/40 no additives of any kind. But, since I think I know better, on the 1st oil change I do, I put Rotella and LOS in it and oil pres. was up 10lbs, oil temp went up 10-12 deg.on flat ground and 20 -25 deg. on a long hard pull. Also "MY" observed mpgs were down .4 from my first few tanks, then I changed it again and went back to Delvac without any LOS and all temps and mpgs went back to "normal". Please don't misunderstand I'm not knocking Cummins or Rotella or LOS, or looking to debate it, I'm not saying I'm right and anyone else is wrong. I'm just saying thats my hands on experience.

That's about what I experienced Bubba.
750,000 on an NTC is impressive. -
I use it because it plugs my oil leaks from inside out so i can wait to fix leaks until i overhaul
