I drove through there one time, and I counted at least 10 major trucking terminals. It is a small town.
Why are there so many trucking companies in West Memphis Arkansas? (Not trolling.)

Memphis is the geographical center of our Transportation network. There is FED ex flying into Memphis day and night, hundreds of cargo planes. Big ones. For a few hours each evening Memphis is largest, busiest most intense airport anywhere in the world in good weather.
Memphis contains a vital strategic road bridge crossings, railroad, pipeline access, electrical access across the Mississippi River. Should any of those fail in the big Madrid future quake The entire USA east of the Mississippi river WILL be cut off from food, gasoline etc for months. Memphis contains McKesson Medicines. narcotics that go out in trucks overnight delivery 600-1000 or more miles so that hospitals can give those medicines to patients east of Denver and as far as Connectcut. (Ive hauled for them and they are the very best... in terms of income and freight you never touch valued at million dollars or more in unmarked trucks that never stop due to predators and other threats.) Those medicines will stop if the I-40 bridge falls despite retrofitting in the future quake. The I-55 bridge will fall and allowed to because it's cheaper to scrap it, throw it away and build a new one in 90 days.
Memphis contains so much more than what is easily seen. When I order computer parts, they come out of Memphis overnight and at my door in about 15 hours next morning waiting for me to open the box by fed ex. Sometimes memphis does not stock it so LA put the computer part on the airplane to either Little rock or Memphis then overnight to my door. I order about 10000 to 20000 dollars worth every 10 to 20 years via Newegg. Replacing parts or building new comptuters from scratch. Memphis is my stronghold when I expect comptuter parts to arrive fast.
The Mississippi River is a major water way for trade in the entire USA. You can put 700 Hopper trucks worth of Corn onto 15 to 20 barges, tie a tug with three people on it and ship it a thousand miles down the Mississippi past Memphis. Real cheap. Memphis contains the national training center for oil rig fire fighting training etc. There are other installations there as well vital to war.
The problem is again the New Madrid Quake zone. Should and when it breaks. Memphis will be a burning Ruin along with St Louis. And the Mississippi will again flow backwards as it last did in 1812. Little Rock will be ruined as well. *Shrugs. who cares. When it's time it's time. And if you are on the east coast of the USA, there will be no trucking or rail delivering everything. That is one reason I moved west. But not the only reason.
Memphis is actually a headquarters of Autozone. Consider this. That building was specifically BUILT TO SURVIVE the worst quake. The problem is no one in that City will survive to show up to work inside that shell. Some showpiece of technology. -
Memphis contains a hump yard for the railroads. It sorts and dispatches freight all over the USA 24/7 Here in Arkansas there are two major jet airfields and three major railroad container yards North and west of Memphis that supports that city's freighting. Also not to stop, there is a Krupp steel mill being raised up in Osecola Arkansas not far from Memphis. Average annual income there is 75K about three times more than required to meet basic mudhole southern living.
bzinger Thanks this. -
Because it's where55 and 40 come together.
DTP, passingthru69, x1Heavy and 2 others Thank this. -
I just drove from okc to memphis this morning..I must have passed 10k trucks...thats only heading east.
I found out as soon as you leave one pack...you catch another. -
I saw 2 J B Hunt trucks going east one time when I was going west on I-40. However, on the return trip I saw 3 J B Hunt trucks going west. So, what does this mean?

That's nice, but we have Carlisle, the gateway to the northeast! I'm pretty much convinced that nearly everything going to the northeast passes through Carlisle. You go North to I80 and don't see a third of the truck traffic. But Carlisle and Harrisburg are busy with trucks 24/7. Wanna trade?
