The other day I went to fuel up. Started the first pump on the drivers side. I got a phone call and got distracted. After the call I went to start the satellite. The other pump had a sticker saying "offroad diesel". I ran back to shut off the other pump. By this time I had already put in 30 gallons. The other pump did NOT have an offroad diesel sticker (used to but 90% was tore off). So how long does this stay in the tank? This was an honest mistake. I've heard that once the tank is empty, they dye is gone. I've also heard that it takes 6-7 tanks before the dye is out. I've had 2 tanks go through since this happened. The last load I took in to day the weigh station that is never open, happened to be open. I just about had a heart attack. Luckily, the guy just waved me by. So has anyone accidentally done this then get dipped? I'm paranoid to drive because I hear it's a huge fine if you get caught. For that load I topped up with highway diesel and took gravel roads.
Who's accidentally put offroad diesel in their truck? (yes an accident)

I wouldn't worry about it. In 16 years my tanks have been dipped one time. That was years ago. I was a company driver and they were pulling trucks over on the shoulder of a 4 lane highway checking fuel. I was only 5 miles from the yard.
I remember our little diesel Toyota pickup that truck that had over 300,000 miles from the early 80's until the early 2000's going all over creation and never had anything but un-taxed farm fuel in it. Haha! Our little way of giving them the middle finger. But it would have sucked to get caught for sure. Obviously there wasn't any concern for that.
That said, I wouldn't chance it running OTR. You made a mistake. You have receipts. It would be a pain but you could prove it was an honest mistake in a court if it came to that.Grijon, bottomhoppercrew and Straight Stacks Thank this. -
Just keep her topped up and the dye will be gone in no time. Its about the only thing you can do unless you you wanna waste a few hundred gallons of fuel flushing the tanks out.

Run the tank down as low as you can go then fill it up. Rinse and repeat.

Hey, mistakes happen. I have put a bit of off road in several times because I found myself without enough fuel to get back to civilization, and had off road in our pick up bulk tanks (for our equipment). I believe that if you write a note explaining what happened, and provide documentation with receipts, that there is a provision in the law that will allow this. Or, you could just say that you add ATF to help with lubricity, and that is causing the red color, but I'm not sure if you could get away with that one.

You mean I'm not supposed to put the red fuel in there?

Never had tanks dipped at a POE but when I was managing a fleet the IRS compliance agent (yes, IRS, that's who enforces the fuel tax law) stopped by our facility twice to dip tanks on whatever trucks were parked in the yard, once in 2012 and again in 2014. He said he only picked us because we were not too far off his path and he knew he could check several in one spot. He did mention that he prefers to spot sheck trucks that he is pretty sure are complaint, apparently the paperwork for a violation is more work than a government worker has the ambition to deal with.
I would not worry about it too much. LIke others have said, maybe you can say you put ATF in the tank. But no matter what I wouldn't hang around anywhere you see a little white pickup with a topper and IRS logo on the doors.Oxbow Thanks this. -
Hi BHC, Oh, you really did it this time,,,,,,just kidding, hey, it happens. I put about 5 gallons of gas in my truck once! I was really tired. Filled the rest with diesel, never knew the difference. I bet your truck sure ran nice with OR fuel. I really don't know how much checking they do now. Used to be, the cops would hang out at the cow auctions, because they knew farmers would put OR fuel in their trucks. 1 farmer friend of mine got a $5,000 fine. I think you're ok by now.

I'm not smart enough to come up with any stories that aren't true, so I usually just go with the truth and hope for forgiveness in such situations.

23 years I've been sticked once , in Banning . That said I used to haul fuel , retail gas and diesel and although I never mixed them other guys cross dropped the red stuff . So that's your story , must be residue or cross drop . If they pop your caps and it doesn't look like the Red Sea don't worry . When I was a yard dog at Sysco a Sapp driver crossed 10k into our tanks lol . They just called the ports and let them know
