Neither of that crap.
Eaton or Rockwell all the way. -
Eaton
I'm not sure if rockwells are still built like they were in the 70's but we had a set in our first truck and if I remember right there was a nut on the back of the through shaft that liked to back out and rattle around in there chewing things up. But that was a 72 pete so who knows. We've run nothing but eatons since -
Stick with Eatons. Had a set of Rockwells that on a truck with over a million miles chunk the spider gear. I know alot of miles however the reman that was put in was set .001 to tight on preload and when the shop put that one in she became a TINE BOMB waiting to blow and blow she did just west of Des Monies and took out the thru shaft and front rear end along with the one that was set to tight the back one. Also when it let loose the pinion shaft dropped and jammed the ring pinions tight and they broke and took out the housing and the shock of that happening broke the axle shafts. All that happened at 65 MPH and I needed a new pair of underwear afterwards.

I have rockwell 3.58s in the red one, knock on wood they have 1,360,000 on them. Power dividers been done but thats it, when i check the oil it is clean.
The KW has eatons, i agree though i prefer eaton. -
So did you have the replace the driveshafts too? usually it will twist them and at the very least you ed up with a nasty harmonic vibration -
Rockwell is owned by Arvin Meritor, these days.
Where I work sells Dana (Eaton) and Arvin Meritor (Rockwell) axles and I can tell you we sell truckloads of the Arvin over the Dana. I'm not sure which is actually better, but you might consider taking a look at cost, warranty length (who's going to back their product better), and do a comparison.
If your truck is still under warranty or has any parts that will be affected by a new axle, you will want to consider what they spec as being acceptable for replacement so that you're sure not to void any coverage you have! You can also ask your local dealer what is recommended for your specific truck.
Good luck! -
Ended up aing to replace the Front diff and power divider along with the ENTIRE REAR AXLE on the truck meaning new axle housing axle sjhafts hubs and differantal and the drive shafts up to the carrier bearing wear it snapped off. Best part was the boss man did not have to pay a penny for that repair since I had been screaming about the reman since it had been done saying there is something wrong with it and it was just within the 10K warrenty so the reman shop had to pay for EVERYTHING.

Thank goodness for small favors on not selling as many Petes... there are only so many foreheads you can look at in the windows of those Petes before you start wondering when they're going to put seats in them that let the driver sit up normal, like a big kid.
LOL - just kiddin'.
