They are not legal in Washington. They are, however, legal in Oregon, and used quite extensively.

He's probably on here somewhere MetalTeamster has lots of videos of triples in Oregon FedEx Freight and pretty much all of them run heavy heavy triples in Oregon.

Nope. Not necessarily. For many years, truckers couldn't pull triples across the Arizona Strip. A section of I-15 that is all of 30 miles. Triples were legal in Utah. Triples were legal in Nevada. But you couldn't take that third trailer through Arizona. Then "magically" the state of Arizona made the decision to allow triples. But only on that one 30 mile section of road. Can anybody say [IMG]

FedEx Freight tractors that are licensed for triples states are licensed for 105,500 lbs. At the time I left there (2013), they had Cummins ISX engines set for 450hp, 1750ft-lb torque with Eaton 10sp. Not sure of the axle ratios, that's not my thing.
I'm guessing the other LTLs are the same.

I can't imagine any other reason why anyone thought it was a good idea to run triples through the Virgin River Gorge.

Idaho Native here. You will see triples all the time on the big roads throughout my state and neighboring states. My barn does line haul runs into MT,UT, and NV with full trains daily. Even our city drivers pull triples, or rockies if they're traveling to another town in the region...I pulled a set today full of freight to a town 50 miles from home to run p&d. It does pay a couple cpm more for line haul drivers but city drivers are hourly.

    D.Tibbitt and Mike2633 Thank this.

I'm looking forward to driving a train in a few years. Idaho would be my best bet as I'm looking at Eastern Washington. I'm pulling doubles now everyday.

Few pull double 53s! Looks more intimidating but more stable than triples.

Wait till the snow and ice hits the roads; with a single axle tractor, and a light or empty set of doubles. Just don't plan on using the brake pedal...EVER.:D
