Hey Guys, I was looking at the Galaxy 939 and the 959,and was wondering if theres much difference, and if they are good radios after be peaked and tuned? I know the 939 is am only, and the 959 has ssb. I'v never had a ssb radio before ,and was wondering if its worth the extra money to get it. I dont hotrod a radio, i get it peaked and tuned thats about it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. And also i was wanting to get one online, and was wondering which is some of the top online cb shops. Thanks again..

30 watts peaked on either one....Both decent radios when setup right.
160 is not a bad price.

SSB is a more efficient mode than AM. AM part of your power is wasted on the carrier, whereas in SSB all of your power is focused on the outgoing signal.

As a rule, you can talk farther on SSB than you can on AM, only thing is the guy you're talking to has to aslo have a SSB radio or he'll not be able to understand you.

Also SSB tends to have a cleaner signal than AM. Plus it tends to not be as filled with trash like AM.

i have a 959 and it has not been worth the money even after getting it tuned.I also have a 33 and a couple of 99's.after the fact, numerous techs advised me that the 959 isn't all that overall.oh well.i have it now collecting dust and i am merely offering you yet another opinion.
find a good used later model 99 and have it tuned by a reputable tech.galaxy 99's are no longer available new i am thinking but are, imho, the best galaxy made.
i have no idea how many actual channels are on a 99 but i can safely declare that you'll never not have a clear one to talk on.they also have the freek counter so you'll always know where you are if you travel around the dial since freek counters were mentioned on this thread.

yes i know i spelled freek incorrectly as pertaining to the frequency counter-

I have the Galaxy 949, it's also a SSB, but does not have the freq counter. I also have the RFX-75. I purchased it from bells. He installed the RFX-75 and done the peak-tune. I added the Astatic 636L mic, and use dual Wilson 2000s. I'm very happy with it. I'm not a big fan of echo, or noise toys and don't have them.

    My radio...
