I am splitting my ten hour break tonight. I am just about done with my 8 hours in the sleeper berth.

I assume a pretrip inspection is required at that point, but is it?

Will logging an inspection be required after my 2 hour break that I will be taking in a few hours from now instead?

    Or maybe even both.

Beginning of day or end of day. And anytime 10 or more is off duty or sleeper.
I used to do at start of day as I fueled, than the next morning again.
So after your done driving your left over hours take a post trip.

Different companies have different policies, so I am guessing the FMCSA is satisfied with all of them. My carrier wants us to flag a pre-trip and log a post trip.

Something that people should be aware, it is not a requirement to describe which activity caused your change of duty status. You were in the sleeper, then spent 15 minutes performing a PTI, then start driving. According to the guidance from the FMCSA, you do not have to write "pre-trip" or "PTI". That is a carrier requirement.

Is logging a pretrip even required? I only ask because I just go right to driveline from off duty or sleeper and nobodys ever asked about pretrips or said they had to be on duty.

You have to show an inspection of equipment when you get pulled over. Pre-trips are not instant unless you are pencil whipping them, logged as on duty not driving.
Someone correct me if I am wrong but you must show an inspection of equipment every 24 hours minimum.

I guess I end up with enough time waiting in lines on duty not driving they probably just assume it's in one of those.

Never let DOT assume things. They will always be negative assumptions.

    That's a Canadian requirement.

    (4) Required inspections (when operated)
    (a) Trucks, tractors and trailers shall be inspected in accordance with Schedule 1 every 24 hours.

I've never had them even ask me about it, not when they did my new authority audit, not in a scalehouse, not on the side of the road.

Nope, as Bean said above there is no fed requirement to note an inspection on a log. For that matter there is no requirement to ever show anything you did on a log.
Question 23: When the driver’s duty status changes, do §§395.8(c) or 395.8(h)(5) require a description of on-duty not driving activities (“fueling,” “pre-trip,” “loading,” “unloading,”, etc.) in the remarks section in addition to the name of the nearest city, town or village followed by the State abbreviation?

Guidance: No. Many motor carriers require drivers to identify work performed during a change of duty status. Part 395 neither requires nor prohibits this practice
