What's up with all the strap hooks secured to the rub rail ?

I don't do much chaining but when I do you can almost guarantee one or more of my ratchet binders will be stubborn despite regular lubing and persuasion. For this and several other reasons I prefer snap binders but I digress.

Those flat hook straps always seemed to me to be hokey at best. Couple that with how easy I have seen "rated" rub rails break I wouldn't hook much more than a bungie strap or a dog leash to one no matter what it is "rated"

I prefer snap binders as well.

Fontaine Infinity Rub rail is not like any other rub rail.

I had a 30 ton fork lift back into the side of it the 3rd week I got my step,.. slid the trailer 6 ft and no damage at all. Barely a mark on the rail.

Here is best pic of mine to describe it.

Sometimes there isn't a good lip under there to hook it to.

On this trailer a stake pocket is rated for 4000 two spools at 6,600 and the rubrail at 6,600. We could buy straps with chain ends but...

Each spool has 4 welds on it so there would be 8 welds for two spools and would have the same rating as the rubrail. IDK, I trust the solid rubrail more than those 8 welds.

Roll the strap up correctly and you won't have that problem as much....hook it & toss, and don't leave enough slack for the hook to come off. Doesn't have a tendency to twist, either, as it rolls across the top of the load and drops off the other side. Also, parking perpendicular to the wind so that the wind is blowing at the hook-side of the trailer whenever possible helps, too...

Thats the problem I have with mine. It can be done,.. but it doesnt like to stay on it. If the wind is blowing,.. forget it. Much easier to to just use the rub rail. It stays where I put it.

Rolling up the straps and putting them away helps nothing. I purposely put twists in my straps to prevent chaffing from when the wind wants to play them like a banjo when rolling down the road.

I used to have a job where I had to hook the straps under the trailer. No rub on that trailer. One of my pickups (dedicated run) I had to park where the wind ran parallel to the truck. Some days even with a perfect throw that landed the strap right where it needed to be, by the time you got around to the other side it had caught enough wind to come loose and blow the whole strap half way down the trailer.

The good news is that tarping was rare.
