You are buying an emissions era truck. Your priorities are:

    1. Reliable.

    2. MPG.

    3. Lots of torque.

What do you buy and why?

I dont and get old iron instead and go fix it with the money i save on constant breakdowns.

If you put a gun to my head though id say detroit. its not the best at any of the above but ita average in all of them. Plus for when the emissions enivetibly explode there are detroit dealers inside of detroit dealers with how many there are.

    Detriot
    Mack
    Cummins

For power it’s a toss up between Detriot and Cummins, Mack is decent but not gonna give ya what a 15/16 liter gonna provide.

Reliability….Detriot and Mack really don’t show many problems till you get above 500k and normally it’s injectors, turbos, head gaskets. Cummins I’ve seen them fly apart at 250k we’ve had problems with them starting at 300k ..they have lots of emission problems.

Mpg…Cummins loves fuel…Detriot probably second and Mack is about the best.

Heh go read my new O/O thread, i spent over 100k on emissions my first year if you count towing and down time. But i also have a paccar with now 670K miles on it amd the previous owners idea of maintaince was "we will maintain it when it falls off". Paccars are also notorious for blowing up after 500k as well. And my story is pretty common.

Sure you can GET a good emissions truck but it requires meticulous adherince to maintaince and repair. It also requires a lot of luck. There is a reason so many people who get emissions trucks especially USED emissions trucks go bankrupt. Old iron has its own risks as well but unlike a new plastic truck you can limp an ailing old iron truck along for quite a while without seeing the idiot lots of death.

Mpg is more the truck you stick the engine in vs the engine itself.

Get a few years under your belt rather than get into a newer truck as a owner op or lease op in these tight times coming

I've really had no issues with the Mack I drive. Had 490k when I got in it and has 610k now. EGR cooler went at 595k and exhaust needed replaced. It has the 445 MP8 and does a good job. Check engine light is on 90% of the time but it doesn't effect performance, still regens on its own. Has a 10 speed manual, very wide power band (1200-1900) and I can average 6 mpg idling all week. I've heard the 505 MP8 is a power house but I've never ran one
