Kroger is horrible too. 7-12 hours, lumpers have to wait for the warehouse guys to unload then they break it down. Some places it's cheaper for me to load or unload than sit there waiting on them.

Also if you break a lumper you kick em to the curb and hire the next chunk of fresh meat that walks in the door. Union guys want disability pay and such.

They do sort through the order so that the receiving person can verify counts and afterward another person can put it away and then find it and retrieve it when needed.

Where the Lumpers job becomes major is like one candy load I hauled. 1/3 of a trailer turned into about 50 skids on the receiving dock. Each skid had 2 products on it. And there where only a few boxes of each product. Took a couple of guys about 6 hours to unload and sort that partial load.

The one that always made me grit my teeth is Mclane Midwest in Danville Illinois. The loads I took there were plastic disposable cups in boxes floor loaded. Total load only weigh about 10k. $250 and four hours! Wouldn't let me do it myself because I wasn't qualified to use their scan system. The other thing about them was they wouldn't let you know when you were empty. I fixed that by not setting my alarm. They come looking for me because they couldn't leave till I finished the paperwork. ;)

    It's all a big Joke.
The receiver charges the Trucking Company for Unloading, so the receiver doesn't have to do the unload.
    They are usually outside companies.

Most of the time the Trucking Co, will charge back the broker or shipper for it anyway.

First at Kroger, you should never have to pay a lumper, it's a big deal that it's no charge.

Many of the grocery DCs receive a rebate from the lumper services, so it's a profit center, stupid really as it's just added onto freight costs

I had a load like that. I had 8 skids on the trailer. By the time they were done it was broke down to 42.

One more reason why I hated Walmart.

For some reason all the hand pallet jacks were bent . . . Real difficult to pull your frozens out with. I'd do it just to spite them for the $50.

Schreiber cheese was the best - $300 to $500 a trailer in the Northeast.

    How I hated lumpers . . .

Never had to deal with them either, a few of my friends have and they looked at it as a positive. Think of it this way, start to see what a typical lumper will charge for a particular load. Then, when you get in a situation where you have no lumper, and boss wants you to do it. That is what you will make for doing it. Heck, they even started up a LLC for this purpose, think of a name not in use(speedway lumpers, ABC lumper service, Limo Lumpers etc etc) and for about $70 you can start a LLC. Then, when they want you to do it... Simply call the boss, ask him for a Comcheck or T-check under that name and do it yourself. Then send that check to your bank. With any luck, this could be an extra $600-800 a month for you. Some of my dry van friends have boasted this $600-800 in a week on occasion.

    Good luck

Check in park in staging area wait for call go drop in dock, park where bobtails are then wait 4 hrs ya I know the drill all too well.Another bad place is Sysco. My apt was 6 am I didn't get out of there till close to 5 pm.Think the longest part of lumping is the counting. After they're done you think about time, but no youre waiting even longer then the time they took to unload.
