How many miles?
Might need to have some idea of a route and miles. Some states like Texas will route you 100 miles around a pot hole.
How long is it?
What is the load?
Do you know how much your permits are going to cost?
Will you need escorts?
Do you have the right trailer to haul it?
I think you have some home work to do.rjones56 and Mommas_money_maker Thank this. -
The states you mentioned usually need at least one escort for anything over 12' wide. If you get on any two lane roads, you may need more than one escort. But, I suggest you check with the states to be sure. Requirements can change from time to time. Texas doesn't usually require an escort unless you are over 14' wide. Most are anything over 12'. You need to contact the states to check routing. They will take you around road construction. I took an over size out of Maryland to Michigan a few months ago. I had to have a police escort for 5 miles where I was routed though this small town. The Michigan permit cost $50. And that was all the way up to the lake. The city permit cost $100. Go figure. The piece also needed $1 million in cargo insurance.
I took an over size to Oklahoma City back in the fall. They routed me over 100 miles around road construction on I-40. Anything over 10' wide had to be routed around the construction. I didn't need an escort, but it cost me a lot of extra time and 100 miles. What you haul, value of cargo and sensitivity to the elements, length, width and height of the piece also comes into play when calculating rates. That is why you really need to check. My rate may be different for a $1 million dollar machine than for $20,000 fabricated steel.Mommas_money_maker and Big John Thank this. -

For just wide load, I've been told base rate of $2/ mile plus $1 per foot over legal. thus your load would be $6 per mile plus permits and escorts. Remember when hauling OD your fuel mileage will suffer, esp if the wind blows!

You also need to charge extra for the permits. If the state permit is $50 charge $100 or $150, you never know when something could happen and hold you up and you have to buy another permit.
I have seen a lot of OD freight in the past being hauled for regular flatbed rates.Mommas_money_maker Thanks this. -
I don't charge more than the permits (including the permits service fee), but I also don't order them until I or one of my drivers actually measure the piece. I have had shippers who don't know how to measure the piece and had to reorder the permits. I have had brokers and one shipper that had their own permit people and used them. If they order them then the monkey is on their back. Things could get tricky, like the city permit that I had to order in Michigan that I mentioned in an earlier post. It will protect yourself if you add a little to the price. Unexpected things can and do happen.
