Does anyone know what year model the engine manufactures' start installing the EGR valves... Thinking of getting back into the business and a friend suggested that I get an earlier model that didn't have the EGR valve... Thanks...

04 was EGR, 07 added DPF, DEF joined the party in 10, except the Cornfield Caddies.
rabbiporkchop, Fhagin1 and Mudflap70 Thank this. -
They really started showing up in '03 trucks. However, some don't if they had an engine made prior to '03. Cat ACERT's never had EGR, but they are not making any road engines anymore. Other than that, every brand of engine has them. Your friend is correct. A pre-EGR engine will give you less grief. California would be the only problem with their goofy environmental issues. If you stayed away from CA, then there is no problem.... at least yet.
There is also another LEGAL option (except California). You can get a current production "glider" truck with a rebuilt pre-EGR engine. You can get a 2012 current model FL Coronado, Columbia or a Pete 389 (there may be a couple of others) and have a, say, 1998 rebuilt engine in it and a rebuilt tranny. And by doing so, if the cost is 75% or less of a similar equipped regular production truck, you can avoid the 12% Federal Excise Tax.
I have been spit balling with a local dealer about putting a 2013 glider together. Have 16 pages of spec sheets now. I have just about everything spec'd out that I can get. It would be one loaded ride. The invoice cost is coming in at around $105,000 right now. A similar regular production truck would come in at $140,000 or more. Just the emissions junk adds over $20,000 to the cost of a new truck, not counting the down time and additional cost from the junk. -

and DPF was added on 2008 engines with DEF fluid in 2011 engine models.

Most 07's don't have DPF up here, some 08's but most do, my 07 Cat does not and it works great.
Mudflap70 Thanks this. -
MAN added EGR in 2001, Mercedes, Volvo, DD, Cummins and Scania in 2003.
But there are emision versions w/o EGR, but with SCR in EU, built from 2006.Mudflap70 Thanks this. -
