Looking to buy a used truck which can pull an excavator in the 30k range. The truck will be used for hauls under 100 miles and on some logging roads about 7 times per month. I am having difficulty trying to figure out if a dump truck would be a decent choice, where to get towing info etc. I am experienced with farm equipment in the 15k range but want to go to a whole new level....air brakes etc. Any thoughts on this?

well, with that kind of weight and off road, would a double frame be a better choice?

not sure if a double frame would be over kill ...but looking for those kinds of answers. I heard the older macs had good strong frames I am just beginning the thought process and will have to move to a cdl if i go heavier than 20k

You don't need a double frame for that. We used to haul logs out of the bush with single 3/8" frame tridrives with no issues. Just shy of 110,000 lb gross weight.

For what you want to do, something with slightly heavier than highway fleet specs would most likely be fine. Full lockers would be a great asset in the bush. I'd go with a lower axle ratio. 3.73 or 4.10ish. Something you can lift off loaded in the mud with.

Probably a low boy or a straight trailer w hydraulic ramps...undecided at this point light and short is best.
Agree with tandem lockers for sure. I am a decent mechanic with plenty of time....this whole set up will be more of a hobby that hopefully pays for itself! Most of the land will be flat and sandy with some clay.

No, no, no!!!!! What the OP needs is a 2001 Volvo with a 60 series Detroit, 10 speed, 2.64 rear ratio. A turdblow 3000D, FASS fuel system, Pittsburgh power mufflers, and send a check to KR for the privilege of driving such a work of art......

    Of course, I kid....

Can't go wrong with an R model Mack.
Western Star would be ok too.
    Assuming they have locking rears

You won't kill a Mack. Notice here, when they hit the dirt, with any other truck, you'd be grinding and finding, I don't think the driver even downshifted. Great trucks.

    Lepton1 and Brettj3876 Thank this.
