Hi all! We are getting our own authority in Maryland (Annapolis area) and trying to decide on the final specs for a truck we are looking to buy.
We are looking for a 2016 or newer Freightliner Cascadia with a DD15 engine and DT12 transmission.
Edit:
"Also, we'll be hauling a dry van not exceeding 45k pounds and trying to stay well under that when possible."
The question is, how much HP and which ratio is needed/best?
Granted, this depends on a lot of factors, but considering we'll be driving out of MD W/SW/NW, which is kinda mountainous, a higher ratio (~3.2-3.5) would work well with a 455 HP engine. We expect to eventually take shorter lanes but that is somewhat unpredictable.
Really appreciate any and all feedback! Also, maybe any recommendation on dealers in the area? To be on the safer side, we are buying a truck with a warranty (Frightliner seems to have a fairly comprehensive 12/100 warranty).
What ratio/HP Cascadia would work best if HQed in MD area?

A simple search you would have run into this thread.
DD15 455HP vs DD15 560HP
You look to be buying used. So you might not want to worry about the HP rating cause those parameters can always be changed.Last edited: Jan 6, 2021

You can never have too much horse power.

You spec the truck for MPG. You decide how fast you want to drive with the engine in the RPM rang the engine is most fuel efficient. So you want to drive the truck at like 63-65 MPH and the DD15 engine to be some like 1300 or 1350 RPMs. I can't imagine with the DT12 transmission they would let someone put some caszy rear end ratio. Because that transmission is all about MPG. I don't know the exact numbers but it something like 3.25 or something. Their is a radio show on satellite radio all about how to spec a truck for MPGs. You want low rolling resistance tires. My company truck gets 7.8 to 8 MPG it has the DT12 transmission. I used to have my own truck.
