Hey folks I was just wondering what kind of stories or "scams" are going around at the truck stops. I live down the road from a FJ and get my car's gas there. I have lived in the area for several years and have been hit up for money while pumping my gas 5 or 6 times at least.
Is this normal? Do you get told sob stories, do people just flat out beg?

Last dude that hit me up said him and his wife needed money to get half way across the county and they didn't have money for gas for the rental car. I said I ain't got it. I then see him drive off in a SAAB! Do they rent out SAAB's?? Schmuck.

:biggrin_25510: A lot of down-n-outers end up at a truckstop, bummin'. Some of those bums you see on off-ramps begging actually drove there in their car. They "work" the ramp for 4 hours, then head for the house. You can tell the difference between the phoneys and the ones that are sincere. The main reason they hang around truckstops is because us truckers are filthy rich and have plenty of money to give away. Shhhhhhh, don't tell anybody......

Heck, that happens just about everywhere. I stopped going to one gas station/ convenience store because of all the pan-handlers. At fast food restaurants, too.
Had a guy come down the drive thru lane at that taco place that has a bell. He told me he needed money to get a flat fixed so he could get his injured little girl to the children's hospital.
I said, "here, let me dial 911 to get an ambulance out here."
    He left.

Rest areas, too. Had one gal knock on out door at the rest stop the other night, about 2 AM. She was begging gas money, but what struck me was she started out by saying,"I ain't no lot lizard or nuttin',..." Now, if she wasn't, why even mention the term???:biggrin_25517: ROFL

One time, I was kickin' around a truckstop for the day, and a guy approached me early in the morning with a sob story needing to get home to Milwaukee to see his dying Mom. 4 hours later, same guy needed to get home to Nashville. Later that evening, he needed to get home to Phoenix. :biggrin_2553:

Well that cinches it for me...if these "bums" can make a good enough living to own three houses...I'm turning in my truck and hitting the off ramp with a sign: WILL BUY ANOTHER HOUSE WITH YOUR MONEY...THANKYOU IN ADVANCE!

I love the guys at the off-ramps in particular....most of them are wearing shoes that cost more than all the clothes I currently have in my truck!

Had another "we broke down and my dad is dying" visitor yesterday in Beckley, WV too...told him I was on the phone with my wife trying to figure out how to finance her daughter's first year of college (which I was).

Also gotta love the guys who go from truck to truck with a small child in tow for the purpose of adding "credibility".

I'm sure it was a lesson in ethics, hard work and persistence. Nothing like OJT at a young age eh?
