What is the typical failure point of Cummins sensors?

Particulate sensor 5461550rx and 4384562 come up with codes FMI=4 voltage below normal or shorted to low source and SPN7323 aftertreatment 1 particulate sensor heater low side driver preliminary FMI.
The temp sensor I assume is one piece and will just have to be replaced? But looking around the particulate sensor has a probe and a driver box. Does the probe usually cause the failure or the driver box? Can they be purchased separately?
    Thanks. This is on a 2021 Pete 567 X15 500.

The PM sensor is a standalone microcontroller with a probe. It requires 12V power, ground, CAN HI and LO on the after treatment controller area network. It's a complete unit, not a serviceable unit. The sensor operates at high temperature and is kept higher temp than the exhaust temp after the catalyst. It measures soot collected on the electrodes because soot is conductive and a small current will start to flow between the electodes. When the sensor does a regeneration to burn off accumulated soot on the electrodes, the sensor is heated to approximately 1450 F. They do seem to have a somewhat higher failure rate because of the the temperature and environment that they operate in.

That makes perfect sense. Thank you for the explanation of the conditions. I'm hoping to find parts in stock somewhere.

This sensor has an extremely high failure rate and has been hit or miss on availability since Covid. I do know that Cummins does have reman units available from about 3 or 4 months ago. If your local dealer doesn’t stock, check your local Cummins distributor.

I may give a reman sensor a try as long as it is from cummins or a reputable seller. Thanks for that info.
    BTW: like your avitar pic.:D

    spsauerland and Goodysnap Thank this.

I have a Dash that looks just like it. Of course he’s male and likes the wife more than I. Lol

    Thinks he’s hot stuff.

    spsauerland Thanks this.
