I was playing around with the cost it takes to run a truck at 5.5mpg and all the other expenses included and came up with it costs $1.26 a mile to operate a semi. So what is the average going rate that could be charged to a venue by a owner operator that has his own authority, not leased on to any company of any type?
What is the average mileage rate for a owner operator?

Try 2.5$ per mile. Again with this fuel economy you should be pulling oversize, that's anywhere from 4 and higher

48 weeks a year
103,076 profit a year after 136,924 a year in expenses. is this realistic or not?
EDIT: I forgot to add that this is also deadheading 500 miles a weekLast edited by a moderator: Sep 8, 2014

The short answer is no or probably not. What you haul and where you run will dictate the average rate. You will have some deadhead miles and that should be factored into the rate. If you want to do some projections it is best to calculate revenue low and expenses on the high side.Last edited: Sep 8, 2014

You could give me any trailer and I'll get what I want. You can have a 3+3+3 in the drive but don't mean you can make money with it!

i was curious as to that, also, bayou. consider that flats have a very hard time with fuel mileage. so do tankers and heavy haul has it the worst.
i bet heavy haul is lucky to hit 4.5 tops. course, they got the rates also.
gets old hearing people say 7, 7, 7's. and if you can't hit that. you're in the wrong business. when they've obviously never pulled anything other then a van.Raiderfanatic, michaelbtruckin, pigeon river trucking and 2 others Thank this.
