I was playing around with the cost it takes to run a truck at 5.5mpg and all the other expenses included and came up with it costs $1.26 a mile to operate a semi. So what is the average going rate that could be charged to a venue by a owner operator that has his own authority, not leased on to any company of any type?

Try 2.5$ per mile. Again with this fuel economy you should be pulling oversize, that's anywhere from 4 and higher

I just factored that in at a average of 2,000 miles per week
    48 weeks a year
103,076 profit a year after 136,924 a year in expenses. is this realistic or not?
EDIT: I forgot to add that this is also deadheading 500 miles a week

The short answer is no or probably not. What you haul and where you run will dictate the average rate. You will have some deadhead miles and that should be factored into the rate. If you want to do some projections it is best to calculate revenue low and expenses on the high side.

First buying a truck that only gets 5.5 mpg is a sure way in this economy to go under fast. I have operated a new truck with aver 7.5 mpg at approx $1.40 (included fuel surcharge) with my last company and squeaked by (miles were not good). Not sure yet on new set up but expecting much better as new gig I pick my own loads with much better rates. Rates depend on what type of freight you are hauling. Heavy/Over dimensional and other specialty freight pays better. Refrigerated pays better than dry van. Also depends on regions of the country. Lots of variables when you are working with hypothetical data.

I was just saying 5.5 as a low. I am looking at buying a rig out right, right now, so I wont have a truck payment, that will not be an issue, I was looking at W900L or T700. Looking to buy a low boy and a flatbed, so I can take higher bidding freight. Am I wrong to say that loads on these particular trailers would be higher bidding freight?

You could give me any trailer and I'll get what I want. You can have a 3+3+3 in the drive but don't mean you can make money with it!

i was curious as to that, also, bayou. consider that flats have a very hard time with fuel mileage. so do tankers and heavy haul has it the worst.

i bet heavy haul is lucky to hit 4.5 tops. course, they got the rates also.

gets old hearing people say 7, 7, 7's. and if you can't hit that. you're in the wrong business. when they've obviously never pulled anything other then a van.
