ATA is a UNION of carriers that hire people to lobby governments to get what they want that benefits them.
Most drivers today don't want to have anything to do with a Union aka as Association. Sadly, not having any representation will not get you anywhere forward but make giant steps backwards. -
They could also call it American Trucking Lobbyists. -

Some of the larger manufactures and retailers are part of the ATA too.

It actually stands for "American Trucking Associations" (plural).
Those of you into Acronyms forgot the most powerful transportation lobbying group, "NITL" (National Industrial Transportation League).
