Less than truckload...
Some of the bigger companies that do this are FedEx Freight, UPS Freight, YRC, ABF, Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL), to name a few.expedite_it Thanks this. -

It is a service to industries that ship goods that are not always in truck load quantities. Like some places might only need a pallet of widgets not an entire truck load so they call the widget maker and order 100 units. The widget maker knows the weight of 100 units and puts them on a pallet and then calls the LTL shipper for pick up. The LTL shipper shows up to the widget maker picks up the pallet and puts it in the trailer. The LTL truck then drives to the next stop and picks up you know 2-3 pallets and so on and so fourth until they have made a truck load out of all the little shipments. Then the truck goes back to the terminal and is unloaded and the shipments are sorted and put in different trailers depending where they have to go. The terminal might have several runs to different break bulk facilities. So the shipments are loaded up and put in line haul trucks and off to the break bulk where they go or other terminals. The break bulk sorts the shipments and sends them off to where they need to go. Then they arrive at the terminal and are put on a city pedal truck and off to the receiver.
