Trying to get some info good or bad on this truck. It is a 1997 model with a N14 and a 10 speed. Million miles. Pinned 5th wheel and a wet kit so ready for an end dump. Need a inexpensive second truck as a backup. It is a possibility? If an oil analysis shows no issues can I get another 100K miles out of it. Asking $7K. We do local grain hauling within 150 miles of home port. No OTR.

Just read that if the bottom end has been maintained (bearings) the top end can go for well over a million miles. Agree/disagree?
Intothesunset Thanks this. -
My truck has 1.4 mil on it currently. They say they haven't done much to it rather than regular maintenance. Heads leak a gallon of oil per day but other than that its still strong. I may be whistling dixie in the dark until holy $#!+ hits the fan next week. But I know a few people that wont buy a truck unless it gets to that million mile mark because the cost to operate pencils out better that way.
Intothesunset and Hogleg Thank this. -
If it was a Volvo motor I can say yes, I have 1.3 million on my and still pulling like a champ, no oil consumption, good psi. I don't know about Cummins but a lot folks said that the N14 is very durable motor
Intothesunset and Hogleg Thank this. -
the main issue that i have see with n14 is that in high milage sometimes the injector cups go but as long as they are maintaned properly they go well over a mil and it's relatively cheap to fix. being that they have 3 different heads u do not have to replace everything.
Intothesunset, Bean Jr. and Hogleg Thank this. -
Your oilsample willtell you more about that engine then the miles.
It could have 30000 or 50 000 hours on it.Hogleg Thanks this. -
The N14 is a reliable motor and it is cheap to fix. Had one last 2.4 million miles before an overhaul. Did rod and main bearings at 850k one head at1.3m. Ran strong till I sold it
Intothesunset, HopeOverMope and Hogleg Thank this. -
Thanks for all the good info on the motor. What about the truck itself? Is this a transition model for Volvo where it still contained lots of content from the GM/Autocar merger? Any other quirks about the platform and drivetrain?

They're ok trucks. Up here the auto haulers loved them to because they were cheap and good fuel mileage with a detroit. The bodies don't seem to rust bad and they hide their age well. A 97 should be mostly volvo parts I think. The ones in the mid 80's are more of a mix. They look very similar though. I think the mid 90's ones have a digital dash display that craps out on them. I'm sure I've seen ads for guys that repair them so you don't have to buy a whole new unit. I've never owned one so take this info with a grain of salt. Plus it is a 20 year old truck so there's going to be parts that are nla. good luck.

I can tell you this much about a 1997 Volvo WIA .
Marmon loved them !!!
They used their wiper motors and their radiators and their charge air system and the same a/c system condenser .
Might even have the same steering wheel set up too ( not sure haven't checked to see yet ).Intothesunset and Oldironfan Thank this.
