I have seen job ads for relief drivers and wondered what this term means/

It means you get all the shifts that drivers have when they go on vacation or extra runs the company might have. You have no set hours to work or schedule. You're at the mercy of the dispatcher. You may run every night or you may run once a week. It's also a lousy way the company uses to NOT pay you any benefits, basically it's a part time job.

True but, if you are retired and you don't want to work every day of the week, or you only want "part time" work, then being a relief driver might be a good fit. Also if there are no jobs available for the time being then at least some drive time can be documented for your next job interview. I would not turn down being a relief driver if I needed a quick few dollars.

Sure the job may fit and it may turn out to be great. It's just my experience as a relief driver (about 4 years worth) was that you got the bottom of the barrel.
