What is a fair price to get a Cat injector changed?

I had to get an injector changed on my 3406E a couple weeks ago. I know what parts would cost me back home and how long it takes me to do it but what should I expect to pay at a stealership to "diagnose" a crankcase overflowing with diesel, replace 1 cracked injector and change oil and filter?

Depends on what sort of truck its in but I think 3 hours labour plus parts would be pretty reasonable but it depends on how bad it was leaking, if it was filling the crank case in 5 mins it should take no time to find but if it was taking a week to go 2 inches up the stick then it would take a lot longer to diagnose. I had one that had pushed an o-ring out and was leaking so bad I could push the priming pump in and hear the diesel squirting out under the tappet cover, that made things a lot faster as I knew exactly which tappet cover to pull off and went straight to the right injector, that took maybe 1.5 hours max but that is the exception rather than the rule, its was on the side of the road after hours, you always work faster when you want to get home!

but it also depends if the bottom end bearings need replacing, if thats the case it will be a whole day easy!

It was in a W900L. The leak was fairly obvious. There was a big crack in the solenoid. I would have been happy with 3 hours labor at a reasonable rate since that's what the Cat dealer quoted me...they couldn't get me in for 2 days. I ended up at a Western Star place and he charged me an hour to find the leak, 3.5 to change the injector and additional 1.3 to R&R the one jake. The bill came out to be $1445...$545 more than Cat quoted and I was only there for a total of 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Thats way too much time, 1 hour to find the leak is ok but it should only take 1.5 hours to change the injector including R&R jake. I was also including 0.5 hour to change the oil and filter when I said about 3 hours.

Yeah, I knew he stuck it to me but I wasn't sure how bad. That seems to be pretty close to the going rates at the stealerships in San Antonio. The only honest shop I've found is Cat.

Not to defend dealers, but you mentioned your truck is a KW. Does it have the air cleaner over the center of the engine? I have fought with those for over a hour before due to seized bolts. All trucks are different and no two come apart the same. Especially if one is 2 years old compared to 8 or 9!
