The axles are out of alignment and the trailer is not running straight . If the tractor was running with the tires against the center line on a straight road the trailer tires would be to the left or right of the line .

Which axles are out-of-alignment, tractor or trailer ? How can you tell ? I have seen many trailers doglegging out there.

if the trailer is out ,it won't be straight with the truck. when I'm running down the road with my tractor even with the white line I look down the side of the trailer and see where the tandems are. they should be the same as the tractor duals. If not some jerk has run over a curb of other fixed object and knocked the front trailer axel out. Now that I only pull one trailer(number 249) I know who to talk to, and so does the boss. makes you really careful about corners!!!!

If you look in both mirrors you can tell if it's dog tracking or not because 1 mirror will have more trainer in it that the other.

Never heard that term before, off-tracking I have heard, doglegging on the golf course, but same concept I guess!

You can also tell, by checking the tires on the trailer. If they feel bumpy on the edges, then the trl is out of alignment. I have had two such tankers in recent months that even though the trl seemed to line up with the tractor, the tires had the bumpy edges..

We always called it dog tracking, because most dogs don't run directly in line but kind of sideways.

Easiest way to tell is if you see one side of the trailer more than the other side of the trailer in your mirrors driving straight down the road, it is noticeable on other rigs when following them.

I had one 1 time that was off on the shoulder on a 10 foot lane when the tractor was riding the center line.

Sliding the tandems back and increasing the wheelbase lessens the degree somewhat.
