I'm 20 years old and I live in Maryland. I turn 21 the end of this month. I have a Class A CDL License in which I need to get renewed on the day I turn 21 because I'm scheduled for an Orientation for a trucking company in Ohio two days later.

My question is, what happens if you fail the eye test at the DMV? Do they suspend your license until you can be cleared by a doctor or something? I'm wondering because my right eye is only about half as good as my left eye. My left eye is 20/20, but my right is half that, if not worse. And to pass the exam you need to have at least 20/40 in each eye. I'm also very tight on cash right now as I'm unemployed ( it's impossible to find a trucking job being under 21 with no driving experience ).

I also have no kind of medical/vision insurance. There's a Walmart close to me that has an Eye Center where you can get eye exams, glasses, contacts, and stuff. People say it's just as good as going to any other vision center and you don't need insurance.

Would it be wise for me to go to the Vision Center in my Walmart to get an eye exam done a week or so BEFORE I go to the DMV to renew my license? If I need glasses or contacts in order to drive, I certainly will get them that day.

Might need glasses? There's lots of trucking companies that will hire you, all depends on your driving record.

I was worried about the same thing when I got my CDL renewed but I passed.I brought a pair of reading glasses just in case which would have meant I couldn't drive without glasses. So if you fail you'll have to get glasses before retaking it same with a physical.

In order to reduce any hangups during your renewal and hiring process I would strongly recommend you go to the WM vision center and get fitted for glasses if you can at all afford it. Yes, they are reasonably priced and pretty quick about getting the glasses done. Do it right away.

    (I couldn't resist this...)....

.... otherwise you could literally say, "I didn't see it coming"....

go to walmart vision center and get tested.

If you need glasses, wait an hour and then walk out with glasses.

I was 16 and I went in to get my permit and THAT is when I finally got told I need glasses. How many years was it in high school I could have used them.

Life sucks. Live with it, adjust to it and drive on....

That's the thing though. I've never had problems driving and seeing stuff. It's not like I'm out there in my car, running stop signs and missing exits because I can't see what the signs say. That doesn't happen. I'm asking what would the DMV do if I decide to try my luck at passing the Eye Exam without getting checked out first and fail, I don't want to risk loosing my spot in that orientation.....

Also, I've tried every single trucking company in my area, and in half the state of MD, NONE will hire me because I have no experience driving, and most importantly I'm under 21, so I can't leave the state. I even have a spotless driving record.

    that's the kicker for you....

    Being under 21.

You'd be better off trying to get a job as a yard mule somewhere jockeying trailers around a yard for now.

The charts are pretty much the Snellen Chart.... Just memorize F E L O P Z D for 20/25 vision... If you want 20/20 then memorize D E F P O T E C... That is what I do to keep the license thing off my physical... I have about 20/40 at a distance, so I am borderline. I do wear my glasses 90% of the time, but if I jump up to pick up a load and get pulled over and I had forgot to put my glasses on that would be bad. So I just memorized the Eye chart....

your stong eye always over rides your weak eye.

you really don't know you have a problem till you actually close your strong eye and see what the weak eye is doing.

you will see out of the weak eye. but most of your vision comes from the strong eye.

that's what doctors have been telling me my whole life. i never started wearing till i hit 40 though. when my focus started wearing out.
