I'm wondering what kind of gas mileage you usually get with trucks when you ain't hauling nothing — especially with Detroit 60 series and Cat C 13/15s.![]()
What fuel mileage do semis typically get without a load?

Captain Mudsocks?? Ooook, typically the "fuel" mileage, not gas mileage for a S60 Detroit is about 7-8 mpg, loaded or empty. I got 8 empty once, I figure Cat is about the same, why do you ask, get paid for running empty all the time? What a deal!! How did you ever swing that?

In my old truck with a C13 it was not uncommon to hit upper 8s and even higher with a good tail wind. It did just under 12 bobtail from Illinois to Ohio with 20+ mph tail winds. The C15 I run now can do upper 7s when empty. I pull a flatbed. And numbers are from a scan gauge that closely matched paper numbers.

I used to get about 7.5 average with my old classic/s60 (pre egr) and empty reefer
-
2001 T2000 N14 - 7.1 mpg pulling flat.
1995 379 S60 - 6.25 mpg pulling flat.
That’s lifetime average.
Both will get 8.5 plus empty, 9 or so running direct at 60 mph.Last edited: May 4, 2019

Not quite the engine you're interested in, but my flatbed spec T660 with an ISX got 8-9 dragging an empty skateboard and about .5-1 MPG less with an empty van.
Captain Mudsocks Thanks this.
