I'm starting as a driver with Landstar hauling stepdeck. My previous experience is 15 years hauling furniture in a van, so I have a lot to learn. I'm looking forward to it.

Could you help me out deciding what equipment I need to buy. Landstar gives a list of suggested equipment. I'm wondering if I should buy it all or if there is some of it that I would not need or maybe need less of. Is there anything missing that you would suggest?

Here's the list. Any advice is much appreciated:
    1 24' x 30' center tarp
    1 24'x20' center tarp
    1 14'x 24' steel tarp
    14 3/8" x 20' grade 70 chains
    6 ratchet binders
    6 level binders
    6 safety binders
    4 5/16" 3/8" quik binders (optional)
    14 4" nylon straps
    12 2' ratchet straps with J hooks
2 boxes 21" rubber tarp straps
    24 31" rubber tarp straps
    2 porta winches
    1 winch bar
    24 plastic edge protectors
    24 steel edge protectors
    8 coil racks
    6 6" x 4 ' rubber friction mats
    4 beveled edge 4" x 4" x 8'
    200 ft length of rope
    ladder

    Thanks a lot.

Probably 12 chains will do. I preferred 2 piece tarps, not 3. Lumber and steel. Didn't even have ratchet binders on my truck. Have some carpet squares, much easier to use than plastic edge guards, but do have edge guards. And steel ones too. You'll need lumber, 8 4x4's, not pine, too soft. (8' long) and some 2x4's, 8' and 4'. A 3 panel red clearance lamp for extended loads and wiring too.

I wouldn't even both with loads that need tarped with a step. Waste of time and they never pay enough thru LS to bother doing.... I would use the money and buy some loading ramps for equipment and also to be used as levelers...... just my .02

14 straps aren't enough for some loads... 20 is more better... a few 2" is always good for taming the unmanageable billowing tarp... and buy lightweight tarps...

I carry 2-16x24 steel tarps a 24x24 machine tarp 2 boxs of straps, but I try to stay away from tarping, which isnt to difficult with a step, I have 12 3/8 chains, 8 5/16 chains , 12 snap binders ,6 ratchets ,carpet and rubber for edges, also regular edge protectors, and I carry 16' ramps also.

Some of those 4" ratchets would be a good idea, especially for a stepdeck, in case you have to throw a strap over the metal panels over the trailer tires.
Do you know what you'll be hauling? That'll play a factor in determining what to bring and what not to bring. For example, pipe stays (at least 4') would be a good thing to have if you're going to be hauling pipe, but if you're never going to, there's not much point in having them.

I have recently retired from this type of work and have everything you need to get started in step deck or flatbed work. Tarps, straps, chains, binders, even a headache rack. If you're interest I live close to Orlando FL and will make you a package deal on it all.
