I am trying to purchase my first truck. Its a 2007 Freightliner Columbia CL12064S with 400k miles, Detroit SR6014, 10 speed transmission, sleeper, etc...I currently work as a dispatcher for a transportation company and am ready to buy my own truck. I know about the business but not too familar with the trucks. I have done my research and looks like freightliner is my best bet. The truck has always been serviced because it was owner by a large fleet, oil always changed, and has new fuel injectors. My question is, is 10 speed okay for long hauls? Also, should i purchase warranty for engine + transmission for 100k miles ($2,000) and they are asking $35k for the truck..

What do you guys think ? Help me out! PLEASE :)

My opinion is a truck is a truck. They're there to make you money. A tool.
If you're driving it, then make sure it has the bells and whistles that make YOU happy.
My hearing is old. I don't hear so many rattles and whistles that someone else might.
But they all have the same basic components that need attention and care....Cummins, Detroit, Cat, Eaton Fuller, etc.
You have the same Cummins in a Freightliner as in a Western Star. If it's mechanically sound, and the body and interior is decent, go for it. It's rare someone buys a 2 year old truck for their first one. First you crawl.
Just be sure and put $5 grand in the bank for unexpected repairs. You may not need it, but if you do....

GTI - you can go to an auction and get the same fleet maintained truck for $20,000 - $35,000 is too high and yes it will come w/ the $2000 warranty, etc...however you can get the same equipment that was well maintained for at least $7500 less. I am assuming you are looking at a Selectrucks or something along that line. From an auction wouldnt carry the warranty but it wouldnt carry the price tag. I paid for that warranty one time as well - never used it once. It may not cover all the things you are thinking it will. Example - it doesnt cover a clutch because it is a part that wears out. You may be fully aware of this or may be like me and assumed wrong.

If you have experience then I think that Freightliner Columbia should be good. But in my opinion I think 35k is actually a little to high. Freightliners do have great trucks, but I never been in a Columbia to see how it is. 10 speeds are great for long hauls. If the truck is in good condition and runs well I think it would be a good deal

In my company those 07 Columbia work real well..hardly ever have a problem most are over 1.4 million miles on the same engine. But the price tag does seem a bit high..

I agree though I think he is looking at a Ryder or Penske truck. To the op, you can get good trucks for under 30K. If it were me, I'd try find something 07 or older with less than 500K for under 30K. Those trucks can be found and cash talks.

if you want to save money i would look for a older model without the egr system like around the 2000 model year and many already have done inframe with warranty !
