What do you do if the kingpin jumps your 5th wheel?

Last night I was backing under a pup trailer and hadn't raised my 5th wheel high enough, and the kingpin jumped over the 5th wheel. I tried lowering the 5th wheel, turning as hard as I could, and giving it gas, but that didn't help (this time). A co-worker came over, raised the trailer's landing gear, and had me back up and pull forward while making small adjustments each time. At the end I had to raise the 5th wheel up against the trailer to get weight on my rear tires for traction, and then I pulled forward and was finally free. For reference, I drive one of these. [IMG]
If this happens in an on-road tractor, how does one get free?

Raise the trailer, drop the air bags and get the fifthwheel tipped forward to act as a ramp and pull forward.

In a yard truck like that, I'd simply raise the suspension up until the landing gear is off the ground, crank down the landing gear until it touches the ground, then lower the truck suspension and pull forward...

In a regular truck: dump the airbags, prop up the fifth wheel somehow (rubber mallet works good), raise the landing gear as much as needed.

Well if that happens on a tractor just raise the landgear and if it's loaded you will have a good work out as you will struggle just a bit, if you have Co workers around you have one of your coworkers put down the fifth wheel while you move forward slowly. Otherwise you will have to improvise the same scenario on your own or turn that landing gear til there's enough gap for you to move.

If youcan get another driver to take a 2×4 to push down on the front of the plate and dump air bags you can typically creep forwards.

Our trucks don't have adjustable air bags, at least not to my knowledge. That would have be nice to have...assuming they weren't beat to hell like everything else in the truck. :biggrin_2552:

And buy whomever raised that landing gear a few beers to ease the back ache he paid for you and continues to pay a while.

The best solution is never to jump the #### thing. You know you have control of the 5th wheel when your trailer nose plate matches up with and make contact with the 5th wheel's lower half just before it is forced to lie flat with a CLANK noise prior to the CLICK of the hookup.

Always do a small pull up in addition to a visual check of those Jaws. Always. The day you are too lazy to do it is the day that load will go BOOM and everyone will laugh and point at you.

Worse case scenario is to raise the trailer with a wrecker.
