I am curious what some did before trucking, I know a lot of people went to trucking after economy fall outs and such. What made you decide to be a trucker?
Myself I was an Executive Chef, I have a culinary degree and everything, the economy hurt the hospitality industry and after holding in for a couple years I finally got the dreaded sentence "Im very sorry but we have to let you go"
I always wanted to be a trucker as back as being a small child and have many in the family who were truck drivers including my parents back in the 80's so after a year of being unemployed I decided to take the plunge and here I am today. I went from standing for 12-14 hours a day to sitting on my ### driving lol. I dont make near the money I did before but I actually enjoy driving on the open road even with the crap you have to deal with, I feel free when im behind the wheel seeing the country. I love my wife and kids but its nice getting away too, yeah you miss out on a lot but you do what you can do and be there for the important events. Skype and phone calls help a lot.
I know some dont give a #### what people were before but im just curious about some stories behind the drivers I talk to.
What did you do before

Well, I was bouncing around job to job, bit of everything really. Done some construction, worked some factories, walmart, never been into anything really steady. Almost started into trucking in July, was doing a lot of looking into it, like schools, companies, all that kind of basic work. Wanted somethign though somewhat near home though so decided to try Job Corps.
So last October I went into Job Corps, got training as a Motor Sports Technician. to my Unfortunate discovery, I completed the classes about 2 weeks to late to get in on the summer hiring. I almost stayed in the program for Diesel mechanics and CDL-A training, but with all the budget cuts they are gettings every program has no stability. I was the 1 of the last 3 students to finish my class before it was cut for good.
So due to all that (I'm not ranting just explaining reasoning) I left for California to try getting work out here, but no luck. Decided why not, I'm gonna give this a shot and now heading to phoenix in lil under 2 weeks.scottied67 Thanks this. -
Well good luck to you, I was always bounced around too as a Chef but a lot do. I was a computer tech right out of high school, worked as an auditor for a hotel company and then got my Culinary degree. Its hard to find a job right now for some people, people these days are always willing to work for less money and sometimes there are 100 people going after that same job slot as you.
The bright side of trucking is that you will always have a job somewhere as long as you keep your head straight and don't get into trouble with violations and accidents. You can work in any state and for any company once you have the experience. You can live anywhere you want since your on the road anyway or you can just live in your truck as some do. I am married so I still have to have a home somewhere, if my kids were grown I would just buy a decent size truck and have my wife on the road with me to save money.scottied67 Thanks this. -
I was an omnipotent - alibi arrogant - lower level executive manager. NorCal hillbilly by birth, yuppie by choice.

lol but what made you decide to be a trucker? if your sig is accurate it seems like it would be hard to give up a 6 figure income for a 5 figure unless it wasnt by choice.

Being a Trucker is something I always wanted to do. I retired in 2011 after over twenty years in Corrections, retired as a Lieutenant. So, going on two years, I began to get bored. So, now, I'm enrolled and attending CDL school. After working all those years inside prisons, adjustment to the civilian world is not as easy as I thought it would be.

I too have bounced around some. I am a student rigt now, but will be a trucker soon. I was a school teacher for a year. That didnt work. So I got into bill collecting and customer service. All call center work. After 10 years being teathered to a phone I neded something different. I have always wanted to go into trucking. Some people dream of playing center field for the Yankees or what ever team. I dreamed of driving a truck.
