And why?
Mine are yellow. Yes, they match the paint on my rig, but that is not the whole reason. The main reason is heat. A dark color, especially black, will abosorb the heat from the sun and reflect it back onto you. Light colors do not do this.
Think about this the next time you go to buy tarps. Light colors cost the same as black, so why make your job more miserable than it needs to be?

Why would black tarps make your job miserable?. Are you wearing them or getting under them?
Not that I care what color, but I'd think black would dry quicker and not show as dirty. Expecially since most of us do not wash our tarps. -
we had red tarps. New, they looked wonderful. Old and dirty, they looked like crap.
I hated giving up new tarps on loads. The part of being a company driver that sucked. -
Come summer, especially in the South, or the deserts, you have to deal with enough heat. So, why produce more? Heat is a major killer of people, yearly. Even if it doesn't kill you, it can incapacitate a person, severely.
I'm not too worried about showing the dirt, they all get dirty. But, I am concerned about staying as comfortable, as possible, while doing my job without making it more difficult for myself.
As an experiment, on the next cloudless, hot day, set two plastic chairs directly in the sun, one white, one black. Let me know which one you manage to sit in the longest.Last edited: Apr 29, 2012

wouldn't lighter colors also get dirtier...
black don't care -
I seen a guy with NEW white tarps w/ black d-ring straps. Now those looked SHARP. Betcha he spends a lot of time cleaning them.

Which is more important, to you? A pretty tarp, or avoiding a trip to the hospital for heat stroke and possible death?
This is the gist of this discussion. We face enough dangers, every day. Why bring more on to ourselves, when we can avoid it, simply by changing a color?blanco Thanks this. -
Yellow steel tarps, blue coil bags, black smoke tarp. Our company never buys consistent colors.

I still can not see how a cooler tarp is less dangerous to work with. I have black tarps and they don't get hot enough to matter. And they sure don't cause any heat to me. Though I only use mine to cover freight and I don't usually sun bath on them.
So please educate me as to why a black tarp is dangerous to use.
Are you keeping yours spread out in the sun in southern texas over your truck making your truck hotter?
I'm kinda thinking the guy that started this thread, is a salesman for colored tarps.
