What kind of hauling do you want to do? Plant to plant, highway construction, job site delivery?
The best all around rig is a transfer but it takes good connections to keep one busy.
There are a lot of dump rigs in California and the rates haven't really kept pace with the times.
We have a couple of semi bottom dumps and end dumps but we use them mainly on our own jobs building logging roads.

It takes time. A good start would be finding out who brokers dump trucks in your area.
You'll have to have a rig ready to go and it has to be reliable. If they call you for a job and you break down they probably won't call you any more. If you break down on a job they'll drag you off to one side out of the way and you're on your own.
You could try talking to contractors and rock companies on your own but, again, unless they know you and know you can perform you probably won't get very far.
Think this dump truck idea over before you commit. It's often seasonal work and there are always more trucks available than work for them to do. A long wet winter will absolutely kill you.
It's hard on equipment and if you're running in a rotation with a bunch of other trucks hauling by the ton the pace can be brutal.
The rates are terrible, again because there are so many trucks. We run our semi bottoms and end dumps mostly as a convenience for our own jobs. If we need some sets of doubles or transfers we can hire them for the day for not much more than it would cost to run our own equipment.
Why not get a job driving whatever kind of dump you plan on buying? Work for a season or two and you'll find a lot of your own answers to these questions.
With no background in dump work and no connections I'd be hesitant to even try it.

Just start calling existing companies and ask them to send you a list of their clients and tell them you're only going to undercut their price by a little bit...so it's ok.
