I saw a post about mismatched tires down below and caused me to remember this question. The first shop I worked at when I first started wrenching (15yrs ago now) the boss also owned highway tractors. I always wondered and maybe theres no advantage to it but he always ran 24.5 on steer and 22.5 on drives? Has anyone seen this done and is there any advantages in doing so I have never seen anyone do it since so I'm thinking it was a crazy thought he had that made sense to him and him only.
What advantage if any running 24.5 on steer and 22.5 on drive?

yes, it will run faster, with better mpg................
-
I run big rubber in the front because it fills my fenders hated the look of 22.5s in there
-
I'm fine with my 24.5 from hitting mud with my side fairings.

Like somebody said in another thread, probably got a great deal on 8 drives that mismatched the steers or vice versa. Otherwise it just seems like more hassle having mismatched hodgepodge on a piece of equipment. Can't really fathom some reason it would be beneficial but have heard stranger things before and would try to understand...

I would use 22.5 for on-highway. Right now, used for frac sand.

I once replaced 295/75r22.5 with 315/80r22.5 (About a 1 inch wider, 3 inches taller)
the big difference is a smoother ride on rough roads and looks better too i think -
I can tell you the 11R24.5 ride sooo much better than low pro rubber. Plus, I'm guessing they would last longer, since they are taller and less revolutions.

Mine are 285/75R/24.5. I use Kelly Tires. So Far so good. Goodyear and firestone still do make those tires with that size.

You could even take an inch out of the spacers on the front axle to lower it to keep truck level if going to smaller size on rears.
