Good morning everyone. I'm installing a hydraulic pump for a log loader its a used set up I got with the loader. I set it up besides having the pump shaft off which is making drive shaft vibrate a little its also not pumping. I bleed the pump to get out air. No go. So did they give me a pump that needs to spin the other direction or do I have pump on wrong like upside down ???? I may need to get a different pump. Is there a way on the model tag to see what rotation is this pump and is it even possible to put on upside down ?? First time I've set up a pump PTO was already on the truck it also had a loader before I got it so I set it up like it was but this is a different loader and pump. Pump is a permco P257 dual outlet with a 2in flange for the intake side. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First is it a gear, variable/ fixed displacement piston, or a vane hydraulic pump? Next a few pictures will really help. What loader, barco, prentice, hood, rotobec, serco? What trans, and pto? If its a gear pump its easy to tell the direction of flow. To change the flow direction on a gear pump you just flip the gear section of the pump. Is the filter in the tank plugged, that would restrict the flow also. The more pictures the better. I have had 8 different loaders on tri axles and trailers over the years, put them together myself, so its easy to figure out with enough information on your side.

Its a permco pump 257 series I found the codes on their website and its spins ccw to pump and my PTO spins cw. I do assume that's my prob. Besides I must have gotten off a little on the shafts to much wobble in the driveshaft but that I figured out won't be to hard to fix. Cetane+ I believe its a gear pump ?? I'll try to get a picture and l will ck the codes I'm sure it says. . So I can flip the gears to change rotation that would save me buying another. It came with a serco 7500 loader I bought its a 2001.

The top of that PTO shaft needs to be turning towards the passenger side of the truck. Is it going that way? It is a gear pump. The center section that the hoses go into is just a bearing carrier. The two sections in front and behind the center are where the "gears" are that are the pump.

If it was going in the wrong direction I would think it would make some bubbling in the oil tank but most serco loaders Im around have the tank mounted in the a frame so you should be able to see s set of gears in there turn shaft by hand and see what way the gears are going the pump, on my truck is set up the same way it is a rotabec but same thing in a nutshell good luck do you have shut off valves on the suction? If you was to have them closed it can crack a pump section I have saw that a few times just dumb stuff to check I have drove logtruck for 22 yrs and I see and hear of different things all the time you never know with these things .

Give Permco a call and see if it the housing can be rotated 180 degrees to change rotation. I've never used a Permco, but for many other pumps, it just a matter of rotating housing. Then you'll just have to rotate the whole pump 180 degrees to get your ports back in the same location. In your case, you may have to rework that rear bracket, since you pump is offset upward right now. If you can change it to reverse the rotation, it will be offset downward.

Yea its a counter clockwise pump. My truck pto is clock wise. I looked up the serial number the manufacturer has the model number break down gives all info on there website. Maybe they show how to reverse too but i didnt see that. So do I flip the whole block with the gears also is it OK to mount them in any position ?? Like the top of pump on the bottom. ??? I think I have it upside down. ?? Like I said first one I've done.

What way does the shaft spin now? We still dont know if its going the right or wrong way. It could be the pump is junk and needs to be rebuilt. Also if you look at the shaft on the PTO (as if you were going to jam it in your eye), and it rotates CW. Then look at the pump shaft(in the same way) and it spins CCW it is rotating correctly. It is as a mirror reflection would be, you observe the shaft as it comes out of the housing it is in. Which way does the top of the shaft spin?

Sorry I thought I was clear in my last post it spins wrong way. My PTO is cw pump is ccw. If i look at pto shaft it spins ccw which would turn pump clockwise (wrong way). So we are past the direction issue i do need to flip direction of the pump I assume its good because it pushes fluid back to tank after I prime it. I also may need to flip the port block to make those were they need to be and so pump is sitting upright. It also appears it is upside down. I put it like it is because my tank was on passenger side so I needed intake port on that side.

    Cetane+ Thanks this.
