I am considering Western Express, and I spoke to a recruiter over the phone.
I dont have any CDL driving experience and I have a clean record.
The recruiter told me it's 5 days out and 2 days home, running the northeast dry van.
Orientation is like 2-3 days at a terminal and 70 hours training with a trainer which takes about 1 week or so.
Is this true? What was your experience like if you went to Western Express as an inexperienced driver?
Western Express orientation and training experience?

IDK, but if you have a clean record, you may wish to opt for a different company. Western Express is known as being a second chance company, for drivers who can't get hired onto other places because of problems, such as too many tickets and/or accidents or some other barrier. As such, many think of them as sort of a last chance option.
I have no direct experience with Western Express, so I can't attest to anything about them from 1st hand knowledge. However, at least on this site, they are generally not referred to as a favorable place to work, unless you can't get hired elsewhere and you need a second chance.SoulScream84, Aamcotrans, austinmike and 2 others Thank this. -
Western Express would not be my first choice . You have been a member of this forum long enough to know that. Let's call in the expert.... @Chinatown

I’d imagine as long as you have a pulse and have the ability to rip your hood or fairing off somewhere then you’re good. If not, throw in a felony or two and you’ll fit right in.

If you go to western express you are setting yourself up for failure. One week is not enough time to learn to drive a truck.

Half of the companies hiring newbies will reimburse your CDL school through a weekly Tuition Reimbursement. If you are unemployed or under-employed you may qualify for a grant of free money to pay for vocational training, like CDL school via the WOIA. The program is run through your state unemployment office. Some trucking companies run their own CDL school, but you are obligated to work for that company for 12 months after school. The most important thing to do is research. Obligating yourself to work for a trucking company for 1 year in exchange for "free" CDL school makes sense IF that trucking company matches what you need. A "free" CDL is a bad idea if the company you get it from DOES NOT match what you need. 80-90% of newbies leave the industry before 1 year of experience. I think most of that is they flip a coin to find a trucking company with no idea if it fits them or not. If you don't complete your 1 year contract you will be required to pay for the school even if you are not in trucking.
There is lots of help on this board. Make sure you are drug-free. Trucking companies are required to test applicants for drugs. The Feds require a urine test. If you have used cannabis, opioids, meth, cocaine, etc in the last 30 days, do not apply for CDL school or trucking employment. You will be tested at CDL school. A few big companies also use a hair test for drug screening. You need to be 6 months clean before going to their CDL school or getting hired by them. This is not an invitation to explain how you feel about drugs or compare it to alcohol use. There are rules and the rules don't care if your opinion is about drugs, even if it is legal in some states. The rules for truck drivers are Federal rules.motocross25 Thanks this. -
