Back in 1996 my Navy career ended with a failed drug test. Fast forward to 2014 I was pre-hired by Werner Enterprises so that I could attend Roadmaster. Werner's recruiter along with their application asked have I ever failed a pre-employment drug test, and or in the last 3 years which was no. Roadmaster asked had I EVER failed a drug test in which I disclosed the Navy failure. After Roadmaster ended I attended Werner's orientation and filled out another online application in which I was again asked have I ever failed a pre-employment drug test, and or in the last 3 years. However they added the question had I EVER failed a drug test so I again disclosed the Navy failure. The next day I was called out of class and was told that I was being disqualified as a driver because of my failed Navy drug test, and that their policy is to not hire anyone who has EVER failed a drug test in their lifetime. I was told that although I did disclose it to Roadmaster, they must have "missed it". So a warning to anyone going to Werner, they do not hire anyone who has EVER failed a drug test; DOT or otherwise.
Werner's past drug test policy

Interesting, as hard up as Werner is to get warm bodies. Going back that far.
mje Thanks this. -
I'm hoping that this is not an industry standard.

That's too bad about Werner. This industry is very unforgiving. The next company may end up doing the same thing.Just keep on applying sooner or later you'll find a company that will give you A chance. This happened what 18 yrs ago which is more then enough time for companies to overlook it.Next company that disqualifies you for this reason, raise alittle hell to be heard.

They did you a favor trust me.
Arielit0oo, falcon71, Jaxx34 and 2 others Thank this. -
Maybe but we all have to start somewhere. If Werner of all companies turned him down other companies will also.

Read the drug and alcohol section. This might become an industry standard and the only way to get a second chance is to prove you went through a recovery program. -
The past is the past .....kinda like back in the day when charges were levied for: Assualt With A Motor Vehicle, Failure To Stop, Attempting To Elude, Reckless Driving, DUI, Possession Of Controlled Substance, Failure To Obey Traffic Control Device, Expired Tags, No Insurance.....The night finally ended with guns drawn after a 2 hr chase across 4 counties/7 cities, I still remember looking back and counting 13 patrol cars and a helicopter in the sky. The upside to all this ? I had the sense not to reach under the seat for the shotgun and blast em. I was the passenger and was exonerated ! A drinkin buddy of mine was driving....I HAVE NOT DRANK SINCE 1986.

If you want my opinion I wouldn't disclose the failed drug test. Others will disagree. I have a buddy who was working in the oil field in 2003. He failed a random DOT drug test and was fired. Fast forward to 2012. He got his CDL and applied for a job at Sysco. He didn't disclose the failed test and was hired. Still driving for them to this day. He did research and found that failed tests can only be disclosed for up to 3 years after the test. He says it's even on his DAC. I haven't seen it and I'm only telling you what he told me. The one fact I do know is that he was fired in 2003 for failing a drug test. Actually, he was supposed to go through SAP and didn't and that was the reason he was fired. Best of luck!
pattyj Thanks this. -
If it's specifically asked for you have to disclose it, or you run the risk of termination later when/if it's discovered.
That said, don't volunteer any information that isn't requested.drvrtech77 and pattyj Thank this.
