Have any of you ever been quoted a rate for a welding repair on your trucks/trailer? If so, what was an average rate with specific repair? Would you pay a premium for a certified welder with professional equipment? Ex: my background is industrial/ aerospace welding, certified up to 5G on specific metals and titanium/aluminum.
ex:
- custom pipes
- trailer patches
- frame brackets, attachments, boxes
- headache rack modifications
- tiny welds for interior mods
I’m in the market for a AC/DC welder and am curious about potential income off the machine. I need to justify the 15k cost to have a fully finished welding trailer.

There is no money to make a living in that type of welding. The real shortage is axle repair the The axle surgeon here in Michigan covers the whole state and is booked a month out. That kind of welding will make you a living.

You need to get set up to start doing buckets, pins etc on equipment too to make it worth your while, couple very good local guys to me make a very good living at it, because no matter how much I try, I can’t froggin weld

I think you would have to be willing to work a wide range of industries to keep busy, not just trucking. But, aluminum trailer repair would be what I think would be pretty lucrative. Took me quite a while to find someone who would take on a repair to my flatbed. He did a great job, and I was more than happy to pay what he asked, even extra. Made the repair as close to factory as possible. It's tough to find guys who will do good work.

2 things, production/pipeline welders dont work in commercial truck shops. Truck shop welders don't work in production/pipeline work.
If your a competent welder who understand the commercial vehicle applications. Name your own rate. I've only met 4 or 5 of them.
Production and pipeline guys cry if its rusty and they have to clean it.LoneRanger, clausland, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
I’m decently familiar with rates in a shop, was just wanting anybody’s personal experience with rates on truck work.
I’m confident in a lot of different welding, just like the idea of doing custom boxes with different shelving, double stack tire racks, custom frame additionsVampire, jamespmack, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this.
