I've developed a very negative attitude toward "The Trucker " . Their articles support ATA and they give groups like Public Citizen and Road Safe America a lot of coverage . Stories like this article are exaggerative and give a false negative impression of truckers . Although there are obviously prostitutes in some parts of IN in the past few years I have only been awakened by prostitutes or heard them on the C.B. less than a half dozen times . The problem is not as prevalent as "The Trucker " indicates .

    REPOST from another thread...

Here is a LL story that you will not hear everyday. I was waiting out a reset at the Nashville Downtown TA in 2001, at about 2AM when a very young teen girl (maybe 18, maybe 14) knocks on my door. When I rolled the window down, I could not help but notice the tear running down her face. Taking a chance, I let her into my truck. We talked for a while and I let her know that I was not interested in her offer of sex, but I would see to it that she got to a safe place, away from the trouble she got herself into in Nashville. I got it out of her that she came up from North Florida with a guitar playing dreamer of a boyfriend that got hooked on drugs. He was pushing her to make some money with her body. I asked her if she wanted to go home, she cried and said yes. When I pulled out of the lot with the girl, I could see this idiot chasing me on a bike. He gave up rather quickly as we continued towards the Georgia line.

We stopped at the Flying J south of Atlanta and got her some clean cloths and showers. She then proceeded to eat half the food from the chow line as I sat and watched her. When we hit Lake City, her eyes began to water again, and I tried to keep a dry eye myself. We met her mom and dad at the waffle house just off 75. At first they looked at me as a thief, then they realized the rest of the story. She had been missing since her 14th birthday. She was about to turn 16 when we crossed paths. I have kept up with her and her family since then, she is now 23, married to a young air force officer, and has a son. She had the guts to get off the drugs and change her life. I am proud of her. She still calls me, and her dad and mom still email me, we have become good friends. I always have a home cooked meal waiting for me in Lake City. That girl will aways have me to help get her through the rough spots.

When I read about how some of you react to the LLs, all I can think about is my own little girl. That girl on your step, did not get there by accident. Something happened. Something tragic to be able to drive her to that point. Compassion is not cheap. There is a price and a risk. But all of us can do something to install change. When I get a knock on the door, I get dressed, step outside, and show off a picture of the girl from Lake City. I explain what happened and what I did. I ask the LL what got her to this point, and ask them what I can do to help them. If it costs me $5 to get them away, so be it. But I know I planted the seed of change into at least SOME of their heads.

Abuse is abuse. The taser, mase, urine, or anything else you do to abuse these girls is not right, and only drives them further into the hole. Be a man. Do something different. Make a difference. Either way, she wil not knock on your door again.

Is it my imagination or has there been less LL's in the lot since Idleaire started coming in. I wondered if it had anything to do with more lighting, more exposure or maybe i'm just dreaming.

It would be hard for my Wife to understand even If I helped out a LL in that way, I guess I would put them on a Bus, but I am sure my wife would question my motive if she was to get in. I am really glad that your situation had such a good ending. I would love to see all of them have their lives fixed!

Hyper, ya did good guy. I've helped out a few myself with a meal or whatever. I sure didn't want a thing in return. The payback for me was knowing they weren't BSing by the amount of food they downed. No matter if they may be lowlifes in someones mind, ya need to remember they are still people, and but by the grace of God go I.

I'd happily do it again. There is right and there is wrong. Doing the right thing has never got me into trouble. I like to think that in a case like that, the man upstairs has my back.
